Description Yesterday, in Beith's garden, we came across this Butterfly/Moth. We're not sure, but with its wings open we think it may be a Moth. I've looked through my ID books, and can't find it anywhere.

Quite the fanciful moth . . .
Then again, the only cool moth we can get where I am is a luna moth and they're ridiculously rare.

Thanks a lot for the favour m'deer
I checked the Red List, and the Luna Moth isn't listed, so it must be just locally.

Well, I'm in Canada, so I don't think we get tiger moths.
Probably too cold for them.

Lovely Will. Moths are so often more beautiful than butterflies I think.
I saw a creature yesterday, too quick for me to catch with a camera. It had a really long proboscis, short busy wings a blur and longish fat body. About twice the size of a bumble bee.
Funny old World..

Was proboscis straight or coiled up?

Straight... in the flower. It hovered as it supped and moved quickly from flower fo flower. Far too fast for me to follow. It reminded me rather of a humming bird.

Sounds like a Bee Fly, as the Hummingbird Hawkmoth has a coiled one, and I'm sure you would recognise it.

You showed me Beefly before in the BP gardens. This seemed several times bigger.
The whole time I watched it, it flit quickly between flowers and was a blur except when feeding, when naturally, the proboscis was extended. Having looked at google images of the Hummingbird Hawkmoth I can tell you that was the very beastie.
And very appropriately named as well !

Thanks very much Will. I wish he'd kept still for a photo.

You said it had a straight proboscis, glad it's a Hummingbird Hawkmoth. They actually do 'hum'
Because of climate change, it's becoming more common and may now stay here for the winter.
Normally, it stays in Southern Europe, south of the Alps, for winter.
I've tried to get a good shot of it but you're right, you have to catch them as they start to feed.

It did while it was feeding I suppose..
It was too windy to hear it hum but all the same, I have not been so captivated in a long while.
So this is why I have never seen one before...once seen never forgotten as it really does look like a humming bird.
It flit from flower to flower so fast there was no way to get a good shot.
Thanks ever so much for educating me (again) you're a star.

So would you if you had it all coiled up, otherwise you wouldn't be able to feed
We get them in the gardens of the BP, though I've not seen them as I haven't been in.
Pleased to be of service m'deer
