Description
Old soldiers reminiscing.The photo in the album was taken in Malaya, in 1957, during the Malayan Emergency.
One old soldier pointed to another comrade, "That's Fred, my
best mate. He didn't come back. Stepped on a booby trap and
was seriously injured. We had to get him out of the jungle.
Sadly he didn't make it."

It brings it home when talking to veterans, just what went down. And it still goes on.
Since I was born in 1948, the world has never known peace, as there's always some major conflict going on

I knew an old soldier. He was in the tank regiment. He told me some terrible stories of bravery, comradeship and loss. And books with his pictures in. Pointed out some of the lads and told me how they died.
This old chap had his shoulder blown away, and having survived the war, albeit in bits, he went home to his wife and daughter.
A proud but humble man, who only began to talk about his war once books began to be published on it had, in later life, a knee replacement op. After a time the knee broke.
You know how this country thanked him when he needed us ? The National Health Service opened up the infected but useless knee and cleaned it out, sewed him up again and left him to die on morphine. It took him six months to die.
I asked him if he would let me get someone on his case and get the knee fixed properly but he said "There are younger people need it more than me".
Sorry for the rant.

I saw a programme recently about young amputees coming back from Afghanistan. They seemed to be getting a good deal. Sadly, whoever you are, if you are old, hard luck? You're not cost effective. My own Grandparents were left to die. They were not even *kept comfortable* and in Grandads case was not even given water when he asked for it.
