Description

Two illustrations in two days. Nice lol.

Anyway, this is the Behemoth monster from the 1959 black and white movie that I guess nowadays goes by the title of "Behemoth the Sea Monster". Though when I grew up and saw it on TNT's Monstervision...it was called The Giant Behemoth. It's a fun giant monster movie honestly. The effects were done by Willis O'Brian. (King Kong guy), and it has a pretty ok cast. The movie is really sort of a loose remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. At least it was after it was changed....More on that later.

But this monster is a giant dinosaur that has absorbed a tremendous amount of radiation that is actually slowly killing the monster. He is suppose to be Palaeosaurus (a genus of dinos that has had a oddball and convoluted history in the taxonomy world that I am not even going to begin to state here.). The dino also has the ability to generate electricity like an eel....for reasons......which in turn, it uses to cast off the ions of radiation from it's body........ Look I don't understand it either lol!

The movie is barely 70's minutes and is a fun ride. Though the scene of the bad puppet in the River Thames does make me laugh though haha.

So....yeah, I just wanted an image of the guy looking at Big Ben. And because this is not a Japanese monster....I thought it would be fun to make my own subtitles for him. For him, and ever other none Ultraman monster too. So I kept the Giant in his name and just added the title of Biblical to it because he is after all named after for the famous monster from the bible.

So I am going to end this little write up here with a little bit of trivia about the movie. The reason that I said...."The movie is really sort of a loose remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. At least it was after it was changed"........... is because the movie was not suppose to involve a giant dino monster. It was suppose to be an amorphous radioactive blob. In fact you can see this in the movie, cause one of the characters in the movie finds a glowing blob like "stuff" on a beach. For some godly unknown reason he touches it!! Which of course cause radiation burns on the back of his hand. The next day the white gunk is washed out to shore and the movie never freaking mentions it again!! >_< So who knows what it is suppose to be actually in the context of the "revamped" script.

Oddly enough....we did have a radiation blob creature in 1956 with The X Unknown.....but that is another monster for another time. Till then, see ya later you monster lovers!!

I need to do a Gorgo image like this. Though I couldn't use Big Ben in the image again lol.

Behemoth, the Sea Monster is the British name, The Giant Behemoth is the American name.

This movie had some balls to actually show the charred corpses of a few victims of the Behemoth's nuclear ray!

British types of films tended to be a bit more graphic though. I mean look at the Quatormass movies lol

Not to mention the Hammer Dracula and Frankenstein movies! There's an actual brain in a jar in their first Frankenstein movie from 1957!!!

I don't know what it was about the British and their blob stuff though. X Unknown, 2 of the Quartermass Experiment movies, and The Burning Damned

Thanks. I appreciate that I try to be as clean a possible. Which is probably why I do all my inking in Illustrator...rather than Photoshop lol!. But thankx again

I really like The Giant Behemoth, while it does have its flaws with the bad puppet and the gunk never being brought up again, I still had fun watching this film.

Also, I really like Paleosaurus since I am a fan of Sauropods.

It is fun. I find it to be more fun that 20,000 Fathoms. While Fathoms is far superior in almost ever aspect...I find the Ray film to have some down right horrible pacing issues. Nothing really happens for nearly 40 or 50 minutes into the movie.

I see, also, the film doesn’t shy away from the graphic burns on those people that were killed by Paleosaurus’ radiation.

also, am I the only one who finds Paleosaurus looking a bit more cute then vicious?

In some scenes maybe. But honestly I just see the Brontosaurus' face from Kong whenever I see closeups of him lol.

I don't know lol. They seem to be going through cryptids and myths. And since Nessie showed up on the screen in that one scene...I think having 2 long neck dinos would be a bit redundant. Still it would be nice to see him come back one day. But 20,000 Fathoms is a Warner Bros character so I would probably see him in there long before. Which would pretty really damn cool I will admit

Oooh, interesting choice of monster to do here. I only ever vaguely recalling the movie, and that was only for a KWCE I had to edit. Good stuff, though.

Yeah I read that one. Was sort of happy that Godzilla ended up helping the dino out....rather than tearing his throat out. If you have Amazon Prime it is on there for free. Thankx though.

Otherwise....here is a bit of a joke video that someone did of Gorgo vs The Giant Behemoth

Pretty fun. Story wise it was nice and concise. Little Easter eggs of Behemoth throwing a car, like in the movie were fun. Just some errors in the writing. Omitting a few words and popping back and forth from past tense to present. That's all

Cool work on Behemoth's scaly face, I have the film on home video now, but for many years I only knew it as one of many classic dino/monster movies that were part of a compilation of movie trailers called "Fantastic Dinosaurs of the Movies!" I watched it over and over again as a kid and made it my mission to eventually track them all down, which I nearly have at this point XD. Nice behind the scenes movie trivia btw, though personally I'm glad they ultimately went with a giant killer sauropod style dino rather than the blob option.

earthbaragon In reply to KaijuDuke [2019-09-05 22:28:19 +0000 UTC]

If you have Amazon Prime it is on there for free. Like I said, the movie is basic 50's stock...but at least it is fun. I had that same tape too. Back in the day before the internet it was actually ground breaking. A tape that was nothing but freaking trailers. And people bought it! Couldn't do it nowadays but man lol!

Part of me wishes they went with the blob. But then again I don't see it being any different than something like..."The Flesh Eaters" or The X Unknown. So I'm more happy they with went with the dino. And I am pretty happy with the title card like things I have been doing with these guys. They feel like complete images and not just a portraiture against a random splash of color background.
