Description Taking another quick break from commissions. :3

I remember way back when a few folks asked for my headcanon on foals in MLP, and I've already addressed it in my "Foal Minidump" deviation. But, I didn't draw any of the Mane 6 for it, soooooo.... I decided to do just that!

For this one, I chose Rainbow Dash, mainly because I don't draw her nearly enough. :C So anyway, this is a quick sketch thingy of her from infancy to young adult. So for those who are new to my art, here's a rundown on how I see the MLP foals.

Infant foal:
Now before anyone starts, I know in real life an equine foal tends to be big enough to reach its mother's milk and stand on its own nearly right after birth, but the MLP canon doesn't really seem to go that route. Instead, they are depicted in the show quite similarly to human infants; small, round, diaper-wearing, and all kinds of adorable. So, that's exactly how I see them.

They are tiny in comparison to the mother, and cannot walk at this point. Like adult canines and felines do for their young, the adult ponies can pick up their foals by the scruff of their neck, but usually transport them on their backs or one of their hooves via specially made harnesses.

In particular to pegasus foals, the infant will have featherless and completely furry limbs for wings, and they are completely useless at this stage.

Toddler:
Instead of around 1 year like our average baby, a baby foal would probably become a toddler around the 6 months mark, where they begin to learn how to walk, run, speak, and all that good stuff. It's at this point where the pegasus foal will begin developing the feathers needed for flight, but they still remain unable to fly. Regardless, it isn't unusual to see a pegasus foal to run around while flapping their wings instinctively, mostly due to trying to imitate those older than they are.

Here, Rainbow flapped her wings almost all the time, usually because she thought it gave her more speed when she played tag or hoofball, or anything that had to do with running.

Filly and Colt:
The stage where foals are no longer considered toddlers. Possibly reaches this stage around the age of 2 to 3 years old. This is where they're getting close to the age to go to preschool and such. Pegasus fillies and colts finally have fully developed wings, however they won't become airborn until around generally 5 or 6. They won't be able to maintain actual flight until a little later. And as with every individual, some develop the ability to fly faster than others, while others may not fly until much later in life.

In Rainbow's case, she was able to learn how to fly a bit faster than others, around the age of 9 or 10.

And I know I completely skipped teenager. It's because Rainbow basically looked the same way she did when she was a teen, especially since she's in her early early twenties. o3o (Around 24)

As for the random drawing of eyes as well as the addition of my previous drawing of Firefly, it's mostly because I wanted to show the differences between Rainbow Dash and her mom. Rainbow is taller, has longer wings, has rounder eyes, larger ears and a more stream-lined build, as well as more oval pupils (which narrow into longer, but still over, pupils), while her mother has angular features, smaller ears, and far-more catlike eyes. Other than that, though, I WANT them to look nearly almost alike. It's where Rainbow gets most of her features from.

Buuuuut yeah. I'm sleepy, and I don't really have much else to say I think. So, as I always say, ask away if you have any questions. Otherwise, thanks again for stopping by to take a peak! C:

What's with the thumb on her wings?

It's called an Alula, basically a thumb of a bird's wing.

I guessed that It was a thumb. But normally they're on bats.

How adorable--and she looks entertainingly awkward as a teenager. Not sure if I like how "butch" her adult face looks though.

Where'd you get the idea for the bird/feathered tails? c: I've never seen anyone else do that, and I think it's a really unique touch.

EarthnAshes In reply to Badgerhead44 [2015-12-05 17:01:14 +0000 UTC]

As a flying animal, I figured they needed a way to steer while in flight, and the horse-tail alone didn't seem adequate enough to me. So I gave them a second tail that's far more important than their horse-tail: tail feathers. Like on a real bird, the tail feathers are the reason why the pegasus can fly and steer when in flight, and so well at that. Without them they'd be able to take off from the ground but not actually direct themselves anywhere aside from sloppily forward, which is pretty dangerous. O:

Will you update this to go more towards being more personal to RD rather than an explanation about baby ponies? I see a very big difference from the other main 6 age thingys

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EarthnAshes In reply to shuzbunny [2014-11-13 22:53:49 +0000 UTC]

Because I didn't do RD's age thing like I did the rest, hers can be found in the description of Fluttershy. While not the center of attention, RD's childhood is pretty much explained there as well.

hey question, why is there a dew claw, on her wing? i'm kind of confused by that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EarthnAshes In reply to kylapon [2014-04-28 19:39:05 +0000 UTC]

Because it's plausible for a pegasus to inherit a dew claw on the wing, specifically because they are flying mammals.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kylapon In reply to EarthnAshes [2014-04-28 20:12:51 +0000 UTC]

OH , ok so because of the mammal anatomy, being more domanint. you gave them the natural dew claw, due to know fingers. am i right? or am i still confused?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EarthnAshes In reply to kylapon [2014-04-28 20:17:47 +0000 UTC]

Not really, no. Having a dew claw is simply a characteristic that some pegasi have, and others don't. It's a gene that's considered recessive.

That the whole episode with them being able to use magic and fly was only for the sake of that episode's humor. They don't actually know how to fly and use magic just yet.

I was just wondering if the claw on the wing is your explanation for pegasi being able to hold things with them. If it is, that's an awesome way to explain it! Your art is just so cool to look at

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EarthnAshes In reply to JemWolf [2014-02-28 03:39:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh no. It's basically just a dew claw on the wings that some pegasi get. I suppose they could possibly grab hold of things with them, but it wouldn't be that good of a grip. o3o

In the Disney movie Hercules, Pegasus was described as having β€œ the brain of a bird” and that gives me ideas that the pegs behavior are more bird-like than horsie.
