How much you charge for your commissions depend on your skill, your time, and how much you personally value your artwork. Keep in mind that people aren't paying for just the artwork, they're paying for your time and for all of the hard work you've done to get to the point you're currently at.
A very basic rule is to at least, at least, charge minimum wage for your artwork, so you could take how long it takes for you do a specific kind of artwork (sketch, flat-color, headshot, full painting with BG) and calculate how much that'd earn you if you were working on an hourly system.
If do you don't want to do that try to be as fair as you can to yourself. It's all well and good to try and make these things affordable but you gotta be fairly compensated for your time too; don't throw yourself under the bus just to hopefully get more clients. Charging too little also could make it less likely for you to get commissions because that just says that you undervalue your work, so if you don't have some value toward it the client probably won't either.
TL;DR: Just go what you think is good for yourself and for the customer. Don't undercharge just so you can possibly get more clients because that generally doesn't work. At the absolute very least you should be getting minimum wage for your work. Don't be afraid to adjust your pricing even after you've settled on a number: this will always change, so if you feel what you're offering should be getting more or less money, change it.

Wow, I will definitely keep this in mind for my future commissions. I often charge too little in the hopes to get more clients, but that's of course bad.

It's not that it's entirely bad to charge cheaply; it's fine if you're like, doing a temporary sale or honestly believe it's worth it for one thing or another. But you gotta keep in mind your own self worth too as the artist and netting your skill and time into a commission. Don't ignore yourself!

And I do get what you mean, don't worry. Quick, flat comms can be a little cheaper, but the pics that take hours to draw shouldn't.

i'd suggest giving cheap offers at first and asking people to spread the word about you if they like your work. then you can up the prices when more people are interested in what you have to offer. Personally i've started just doing requests so that people can see what i can create

Wow I just found out having "name your price" commisions can be pretty profitable. I was planning on charging my friend about $10 for a piece and he up and offered me $50!
