i think you are confusing the elder things with Cthulhu. Cthulhu is a Great Old One... neptune is just an earth god.. he doesn't stand a Chance.. the only thing that cans stop a great old one is an outer god.

As i said, Cthulhu is described only as an alien that came to earth during primordial times, and was forced to retreat to teu bottom of the seas for some reason. There is nothing on this description that puts him as above a god. Heck,some guys on a boat managed to escape from him actually.
