Description In my last stamp I said I hate most fanfiction. When it comes to some I like, I don't mind GOOD self inserts that aren't sue-ish. For example if I were to write myself in a Naruto fanfiction, I'd be the one eyed ninja, who has social issues and is a total fangirl but can be shy. I'm not the most attractive ninja so no one falls in love with me. If I were to write a Negima fanfiction, I'd be the outcast student that hangs out in the manga club and is a popculture nut. I'd probably hang out with the baka rangers. Most attractive? No, I'd be a beta girl instead of an alpha female like Ayaka. If I were to make a Winx fanfiction, I'd be a fairy who can't control her magic because I'm out of control emotional.

Learn what works and what doesn't. Its okay to make self inserts as long as they aren't sues or overused.

Thank you for taking each X-Reader on its own individual merits.

I have a Kylo Ren X Reader story, but guess what...I have a character who can't use the Force, and has no military training, who has to find a way to survive in an environment where she is way outgunned by the others around her, and she can't just magically worm her way out.

Oh, and I am 11 parts in, and have not had a romantic interaction.  Why?  Because I feel like the characters would not realistically go for it.

I have seen many X-Readers I didn't like, but I have also seen others that I did.  I take it case by case rather than assuming one way or the other.  So thank you very much again!

A lot of people draw a line between a self insert (a character that resembles the author so they may live through them vicariously) and an author avatar/cameo. Examples of the former I'm sure you know; of the latter, anything from a good 'sona (be it fur, scale, pony, troll, or whatever else) to Kurt Vonnegut's works (if you don't know, google is your friend) where the author shows up as a background character.

I don't like random cameos. I find them unfunny and very stupid. I like it better when its a well rounded person who is going to be main charcter but dosne't act all sue-ish and whiny.

It IS a manner of personal taste. I've seen secondary/background insertions pulled off well more often than primary character ones though.

Dante's divine comedy is basically self-insert fan fiction

LOL, that's a funny way to look at Dante!

(It gets even more meta when you consider I had to stop reading it because of a screaming nightmare where I was in Dante's place and Virgil was taken from me.  And I ended up having a crying freak-out in the dream over the injustice of what was happening.)

... jokes stop being funny if the other people don't know anything about classical literature
