A lot of people draw a line between a self insert (a character that resembles the author so they may live through them vicariously) and an author avatar/cameo. Examples of the former I'm sure you know; of the latter, anything from a good 'sona (be it fur, scale, pony, troll, or whatever else) to Kurt Vonnegut's works (if you don't know, google is your friend) where the author shows up as a background character.

I don't like random cameos. I find them unfunny and very stupid. I like it better when its a well rounded person who is going to be main charcter but dosne't act all sue-ish and whiny.

It IS a manner of personal taste. I've seen secondary/background insertions pulled off well more often than primary character ones though.

LOL, that's a funny way to look at Dante!
(It gets even more meta when you consider I had to stop reading it because of a screaming nightmare where I was in Dante's place and Virgil was taken from me. And I ended up having a crying freak-out in the dream over the injustice of what was happening.)
