This almost makes Garrus look possessive, which is neither wholly uncharacteristic or surprising considering the person he's with. I love the raw emotion you see in him while Shepard's face is hidden. The change in character (or perception of change) is very lovely and I truly wish it had been something we could have seen in-game. Great job!

Oooh, I can't wait for ME3. They'd better not disappoint.

Almost looks angry until you look a little closer, then look in his eyes say he can hardly believe he's here right now;] For a sci-fi character, this is incredibly real, well done.

i heard some people say they don't like the possessive look on Garrus' face in this picture but personally I must say, I absolutely adore it. I can see him as a turian be very possessive about his woman. But that's just my own imagination and my gutter mind. I love this drawing very much. Great work. Wish I could draw half as good as this

efleck In reply to J4N3M3 [2011-07-27 15:50:44 +0000 UTC]

I don't mind people not liking my drawings *wipes tears from eyes*

lol

Though possessive wasn't the what I was originally going for - more like intensity, it does look rather possessive. My guess it's the shape of his brow plates.

But then again, people see different things in images.

I'm glad you like it. It's always nice to hear from people. Knowing others enjoy my drawings really motivates me to keep working.

I'm just amazed you make these amazing pieces with ... charcoal? Out of curiosity, what format are you using (I mean, how big do you make the original drawings?) I'm using a 0,5 mm pencil myself and I sometimes think that leaves too thick lines.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

efleck In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-07-26 13:56:25 +0000 UTC]

Yup, all charcoal. I wish I could say I bought some nice, high quality paper, but I'm too impulsive - so these drawings were done in an old coil sketch book I found laying around. The paper is fairly heavy though, and has good texture - size is about 8" x 11" (so about 21cm x 28cm).

This snippet measure 4" x 5". I use charcoal pencils (soft, med & hard). I have a few smudge sticks and a malleable eraser (my best friend). I have a normal pencil sharpener as well as a really sharp blade I can use to sharpen.

If you are using a mechanical pencil, you may find it hard to get sharp points. Hope that helps!

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to efleck [2011-07-27 10:52:23 +0000 UTC]

That sounds good, and of course when inspiration hits you, you must start working at once, right, regardless of whether or not you have the perfect materials at hand?

So that's roughly the size of an A4 paper, isn't it? Thanks for sharing.

Oh now I see. I think I know what you mean by charcoal pencils. I used to have these really soft, up to 4-5 B (is that the term?) pencils that felt pretty much like coal, maybe yours are something similar? I notice my current pencil is 2B which is perfect for my sketches that I then scan into my computer.

Yes exactly, I'm using a 0,3 mm pencil sometime, that's a little bit better at that.

efleck In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-07-27 14:34:03 +0000 UTC]

You can get soft pencils, like the high Bs, but they are still graphite, the charcoal pencils come in a range of hardness, but they are made of charcoal, so the tips are pretty brittle, but the dark lines you can get are excellent. If you are doing line work I wouldn't recommend charcoal only because it smears so badly.

I have to stay away from the soft pencils when I'm planning a drawing because I tend to push really hard (especially if I'm getting agitated lol) and then I ruin the paper and the charcoal doesn't transfer because of the graphite. Blah.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to efleck [2011-07-27 21:23:21 +0000 UTC]

Right, sorry. I was trying to find a word for what they are but couldn't think of 'graphite' for the life of me. I see. So they're not the same thing at all?

Oh, right ... I bet they're brittle indeed. I don't think I've ever tried a true charcoal pencil, perhaps I'll look for one next time I'm in town.

Oh, that must be annoying. I realized I was doing the same with my tablet pen, my nib was so worn down, lol.

I really need to get a tablet. What kind do you have? How do you like it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to efleck [2011-07-29 23:36:35 +0000 UTC]

I can highly recommend it. I have a Wacom Intuos 4 Medium, Bluetooth and I'm very happy with it. Of course, I've never had a tablet before this one so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I'd heard a lot of good things about Wacoms before I bought mine. Hope that helps.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

efleck In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2011-08-10 18:36:35 +0000 UTC]

So I bought one of those Wacom Intuos... but I suck at it. Maybe I need practice.

I'm thinking about returning it and getting a cheaper one to start off with, like the bamboo... though I'm not sure what the differences are.

The alternative is a $1200 two in one laptop/tablet made by lenovo, which woulf allow me to draw directly on the scene.

I just don't know which way to go.

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to efleck [2011-08-20 20:57:54 +0000 UTC]

That's excellent. I hope you will be pleased with it and of course it takes some time to adjust to it if you've never used one before. It took about ten minutes for me to draw even a simple line with mine.

Right, well the best I can say is that it's important to get the right size for how you work. If you only work on small canvases/small monitors, a smaller tablet will probably do. For me working on giant bitmapps I could have done with the XL tablet. Sadly that wasn't available so I have the medium one instead and it's a bit too small in all honesty.

That sounds like an interesting combination, never heard of them. So what did you choose in the end? Sorry for being so late, I've been really busy with house problems for the past couple of weeks so I haven't logged into here in a while.

First of all, sorry I'm responding to this after so much time, but my messages just seem to pile up. Also, I should apologize for my terrible terrible spelling and grammar in that previous post... WOW. I don't know what was wrong with me...

I just want to say thanks for the tablet guidance. I am getting better with the cheaper one I went out a bought. I still want that new laptop, but for the moment this wacom tablet is doing the job. I still suck with it, but I am improving!

What .. ha ha, I didn't even notice anything out of the ordinary, so no worries there.

Glad if I could help in any way. He he, I remember when I first tried using the tablet pen .. it was so weird not looking down at a real pen and a piece of paper. I hope you'll discover all the wonderful benefits of your tablet, something I have yet to do with mine. I basically use it for lining so far.
