Description

It's  #mermay!!!

I'm falling a bit behind and it won't get any easier for me to be on time with my drawings this week, but I had lots of fun today with was originally yesterday's prompt: Mucha.
I LOVE the amazing art of Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha and he's one of my biggest inspirations since I was a kid.
(My prompt list: ejderha-arts.deviantart.com/st… )

I decided to use Mucha's famous theatrical posters for Sarah Bernhardt as a starting point, telling the story of Loreley with some key images the way Mucha did with his lithographs.

The Legend of Loreley:
"Once there lived nymphs around the Rhine but when people began to populate the banks of the river they were chased away. Only one nymph stayed behind because she couldn't bid farewell to the Rhine. She settled on the high rock where she could see the whole river.
With her beauty and her beautiful sad singing while combing her long golden hair, she unwittingly distracted shipmen, causing them to crash their ships on the rocks.
Many lost their lives here.
One day a young knight wanted to see the girl from close by, so he decided to travel to the rock with his squire, but, like so many before him, he was enchanted by her singing. He died when his boat hit the rocks.
However, the squire managed to save himself and brought the sad news to the young knight's father. Full of anger and grief he instructed his men to throw the nymph off the rock, so that she would drown like all her victims. When the nymph saw the men approaching, she threw her necklace into the water and sang one last song. Then large waves emerged from the Rhine that carried her away, whereupon the nymph disappeared forever."

Now bear with me please, because I'm taking some artistic license here with my drawing concerning the legend of Loreley. I'm fully aware that she should be in fact a nymph (legs), not a mermaid (fishtail).
But Loreley is also mistakenly called a siren, since sirens are known in Greek mythology as dangerous creatures, who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island.
And somewhere through history and art sirens (birdy) and mermaids (fishy) also get confused about the singing and damnation part and it seems that they've ended up as interchangeable beings.

(The actual Loreley is a 132 meter high rock in Germany along bank of the river Rhine in the Rhine Gorge where at this point the river makes a sharp turn, creating a strong current. Many ships have crashed at the Loreley.

Thank you so much!
And yes, you should absolutely try to do some Mucha inspired art.
Trying out other styles always can give you fresh inspiration and an opportunity to learn something new. (^_^)

I love this, I saw and instantly thought tarot card. I was hoping you had drawn a full set of the major arcana, lol. Great job. I would love to color this piece and add it to my page in "Edits I've Done" check out my other stuff before you answer!

Thank you very much! I love it that you got that tarot vibe. I'm actually still contemplating making a Tarot series, possibly in Art Nouveau style.
Your request makes me feel a bit ambivalent, if I'm honest: part of me is indeed curious what you can do with my lineart, but on the other hand I'm quite possessive  concerning my work. It is after all my work and when somebody else gets credit for a colour version I feel a bit cheated...
Must think about this...
Hmm.....   ..... okay, curiosity wins! You can give Loreley her "make-over".

Since I saw a Tarot card in your work, I thought it would be cool to do an Art Nouveau style card set. I am only doing the Major Arcana and my main inspiration was Henri Privat. I am working on the template now. I will show you what I have when I am finished.

I can understand. If you look at the other color work I have done I always give credit to the original artist.

The last piece I did the artist had their name on the work before I started outlining it so I joutlined their name was well and kept it with the piece.

I only added my logo on the side since I did the color.
I would show you the piece first if you did allow me to color MerMay#13 yet I completely understand where you are coming from and I don't want you to feel that you have to.

I love it as a black and white sketch.

Just when I see a black and white line drawing I think coloring book, lol

Saying no is a valid answer and I won't keep asking you.

Don't worry I still love your art and I will still follow you

My apologies for my very late reply.
Your plans for the Major Arcana sound interesting and being inspired by Henry Privat is an excellent choice! I’ll be looking forward to your work.
Thank you for being so understanding about my doubts and hesitation. I truly appreciate it.
But I think you missed one minor detail of my former reply: I said “yes” in the last sentence!
Because like I said: curiosity wins!
I would love to see what you can do with colours and I have confidence in you for crediting me and doing a lovely job!
Good luck! I can’t wait to see the result!

And I am glad you are looking forward to seeing my Major Arcana.

I've seen this in "Undiscovered" and liked it - and I had to laugh that it was part of your mermay challenge. I really love it <3

My apologies for my very late reply. When I read your comment I took a quick peek in "Undiscovered" and I saw it too!
I must admit that I never looked at that section before and now I wonder how I got in there. I was so surprised!    But it was a happy surprise.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment!

Thank you for your kind words!
The art of Mucha is one of my biggest loves within the world of my favourite art style! I just adore the beauty of his work, the decorative aspects and the inspiration it gives me. But I always try to avoid just copying his style without giving it some of my personal touches. I hope I still manage to make it my own.

You have really a huge talent for drawings and paintings. It's undeniable ! I'm impressed by your creativity and your beautiful style. The art of Mucha is stunning but i'm sure you'll make better work when you'll find your way ... when you'll find the story you want to tell.
