I have yet to find any underground fortresses on survival, one time a friend activated creative and just flew around building and when i wandered near his structure at the map's edge i saw a brief glimpse of a HUGE network of lit tunnels while the chunks loaded, but I never dug in cause I felt it was cheap
I never knew they could be big enough to be a city though! Makes me want to head out and explore more on a new map

Yeah man, I can't wait to legitimately find a stronghold on our SMP server. I've never messed around with them too much because I always find them flying around in creative on single player, and that kinda takes the fun out of it.
This was actually from an adventure map we did though. This guy made a huge labyrinthine ruined city underground. It was awesome.
