The youth's paws hung both dejected and irritably from the ledge on his perch. His crimson stare bore down on them, a glare at his own apparent incompetence.

What did that brat Vitani have that he didn't?
How could Rani just..

A muted growl bubbled in his throat.

Did she really mean what she said? The Tree of Life was no place for him, so it seemed.

His pouting was disturbed by a tumble of pebbles from above, followed by a gushed, "Kion! There you are."

Zuri's sunkissed entity emerged from the rubble, climbing carefully down the slope as to not dirty her appearance. The grin she was was not returned by the broody Lion Guard leader.

She cleared her throat when he didn't respond at first, straightening her posture and forcing a deeper look of enthusiasm.

"Oh, hey Zuri." He muttered at last, not sparing the female a glance. Duchess or not, Kion didn't quite care for Zuri. Rather, he preferred her friend Tiifu's company over her. She at least knew when to shut up.

Zuri tilted her head. "What's the matter?" She inched closer. "Shouldn't you be getting ready to leave for the lively tree, or whatever?" A tinge of disgust laced her inquiry.

Kion's frown grew impossibly larger. "I'm not going."

This seemed to pique Zuri's interest, and a dark glint dazzled in her eye. "Really?" She tried to not sound too pleased. She didn't prod any more, his look of defeat already said enough; he and Rani were not going to become a thing after all.

"Yes, really," He snapped for a moment, his tail lashing and he thought if he glowered hard enough into the distance, perhaps he'd burst the savannah into flames. His irate simmered just as quick as it came when the breeze wrapped around his fur, and he sighed. "I just don't know what to do now. I don't feel like I belong here anymore, though. Kind of running out of a purpose."

There wasn't a beat that Zuri missed, not allowing any lapse of silence.

"Kion, you're a prince!" Zuri smiled widely at him again, though it didn't reach her eyes. It never did when she was scheming. The Lion Guard leader would later learn of her deceitful ways, much too late. "You can do whatever you want, go wherever you want."

Kion's ears raised slightly, considering her words. His father had always taught him there was a proper balance, methods to the madness, all of these circles and their rules of life, but where did he want to fit in rather than were he was told to fall in line at?

"Yeah.." He mumbled pensively, both to the lioness and himself. Zuri stepped over his back then, and he side-eyed her proximity.

"Plus, you wouldn't be alone," She announced, rounding him to look him head on. "I could go with you, wherever that may be. If you wanted me to.. You'll always have me for support." Kion fed into the batting of her eyelashes, and little did he know that as he agreed tentatively, he was sealing an unhappy fate with the Duchess.

"Alright.. Let's do it."

A day or so after Kion and Rani's fight. Kion isolated himself heavily to be with his thoughts, which do not help his frustration. Zuri has always had a thing for Kion but pretty much for the wrong reasons; status. He's pretty to look at, but doesn't care much for what he entails otherwise, and Kion can say the same for her. But as he finds himself with no one else to turn to (his parents want him to remain in the Pridelands and be the Guard Leader and Kiara's advisor, so they didn't really support his adventures across the plains with his guard and would rather him be local), he falls for Zuri's offer to run away together because why not?
