Welp, it's very hard to me to make an original-looking design tbh, but i try to make the process fun (the journey is more important than the destination!)
My inspirations come from other artists such as you, nachtbeirmann, jwnutz... or by playing "colorful" games, like earthbound and legend of mana. They have such cool designs in their characters and monsters, it's very cool to look at.
The secret for a great-looking design is to relax and do what makes you happy while you're drawing, because it's flow better
