World War II began in 1939 and lasted until 1945. By this time, many states were involved in the conflict, including Japan, which entered the war in 1941.
Japan was forced to surrender after the Allies bombed its territory. In 1943, the Allies held the Tehran Conference, which agreed that Japan would be divided into a communist north and a capitalist south.
After the end of the war, Japan was occupied by the Allies, and in 1947, Japan declared Hokkaido independent. In 1949, Japan's occupation was officially ended and its independence was restored.
Japan remained divided into a communist north and a capitalist south until 1990, when both parts were merged into one.
The war ended without the bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Japan finally regained its independence.
