It's a short story about the human colony on a far planet without connection with Earth for a dozens of years. Their equipment is aging, high-tech equipment breaks down without the ability to repair it. They have a machine, a replicator, that can recreate any object or device, working on the molecular level, but a few of the elders are afraid of this and keep the machine inoperable for seemingly justifiable reasons.
