Description I think that having to click a button to see the category description is nice and clean, but many people just don't care enough to click that button to make sure they are submitting to the right category.

So I vote that they move the description right under the category you select.

It would change to reflect the category for whichever category you select. So if you select deviantART Related, it would say:Submissions that are deviantART related, including deviant IDs, dA tutorials, dA software skins, deviations about deviantART people, and more. And then if you select a sub category, it would change to say that category's description.

I think that's a decent size for the description box, and if there's a long category description, they can add a scroll bar to it.

I'm not sure if I like the background color/border for the description, since you can choose things at the top with the same color/border, but it's not a big deal.

What do you guys think? Anything you would add?

Also, this added with =selizabeth suggestion about adding in important FAQ's would be good I think

Yeah

Granted, it won't fix everything, but it should fix a lot of issues there.

Hopefully.

This is how it should be done.

And I wonder. Why they don't have this at submitting process, while they have it in 'report deviation/misplaced deviation' process? That's a fail.
Though I'd rather have category description above.

Yeah, lets hope they do something like this

Indeed... because that 'gallery info' button is rather not practical and easy to miss...

(here's mine idea of it: [link] )

Ah nice. Interesting idea to add the full category path to it all. I just hope it doesn't cause people to go "textwall, I'm going to ignore it all now". I think just listing each description as you click on it would work, so you can click things, read the description, and move on from there.

But who knows, having it all there might work too.

Well you have half a point here with "textwall, I'm going to ignore you". It's true, it can cause people to not read it. But then again, those who don't give a damn about categories won't read description no matter where you put it, no matter if you did it mine way or yours. Those who care to have their artwork in right gallery, those will, I believe, read it. No matter if it describes just current category or full category path.

Though - to hold to your "textwall problem" a bit longer -- There is always a middle path, that is adjustable description - so you could decide how much of description you want on the fly. If you had just current category description (as you suggest), there would be more>> button somewhere to expand description to full category path, for us who like it my way. And vice versa, <
Ability to customize it to the way you want it works the best.

Yeah, good point. People who don't care about categories just won't do it right, no matter what you do. So you can't really make anything idiot proof.

This would be awesome!!!

electricjonny In reply to FantasyStock [2010-09-19 00:51:06 +0000 UTC]

Indeed

If I remember, it used to be like this, but then when version 5 or 6 came along, they tried to make it simpler and add it via a button. But really, who feels bothered enough to check the gallery description to make sure it's right? I mean, I do, but I don't think the normal users do.

Another brilliant idea! Often I wonder if I'm submitting art into the right gallery, and have to go to the browse section and hunt to the correct sub-topic to find what it's for. Plus, I can see where others wouldn't do that and just submit wherever. This would help the Gallery Moderators a great deal, I think. I'd love to see this added to the site.

electricjonny In reply to llinderv [2009-07-20 20:56:17 +0000 UTC]

Exactly

It wouldn't be too hard to do, I don't think, and it would just be easier to see where things should go. It's not hard to click the button, but that's an extra click, and not everyone does that to make sure things are in the right category.

Totally, it would make things such a breeze. Have you tried mentioning it to someone who is in the position to execute something like that?

I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. All I can do is modify other scripts, and it doesn't change much, all I really change are the images/position of things.

excellent! the Lit community has been talking about this for quite a while now, i specifically remember it in one of `GeneratingHype 's poll's, so awesome to get a tech-geek bring life to these kind of ideas now who's the tech-geek who's gonna implement them?

Thanks for the comments

yeah, I made a mock-up of something similar to this where the description showed up in the extra space next to the categories. I think this makes better use of the page space though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

electricjonny In reply to selizabeth [2008-12-03 03:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Ah nice, I just looked at that. The only problem with mine is that it takes up vertical space, so you have to scroll more through the categories.

But I really like your idea to add FAQ's depending on which category you use

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

selizabeth In reply to electricjonny [2008-12-03 04:03:57 +0000 UTC]

i think a combination of the two would be good.. a one-two punch of information.

Hehehe, I might, if I can do it with CSS, but I think it would need to be a Greasemonkey script.

All it does is put the category description right on the page, so you don't have to click the button to see what the category is.

Tepara In reply to electricjonny [2008-12-03 03:45:11 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, yeah still dont get it lmfao. I know what your saying. But looking at what you have up there, doesnt it look like that now? Which is why Im confused, cause Im not seeing anything different, I kinda need old and new beside each other to see the difference I think lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

electricjonny In reply to Tepara [2008-12-03 03:47:53 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well that bottom part where it says Category Description isn't on the main submission page. You get a button to the lower left to see the description. So the bottom part, between the OK/Cancel and the different categories isn't on the main submission page.
