Description // Update
I updated this so that the comments that pop up don't get squished into a tiny line when the number of comments is huge... click this and read the first (1 Reply) to see what I mean.

Also, the page now (smoothly) scroll back to where you were when you opened it, so that's nice so you don't have to go searching if the reply string is uber long.

• (I updated this so you can turn it on or off. Go to Tools > Greasemonkey -> User Script Commands -> Scroll back on closing fast replies? And hit OK to scroll back, or Cancel to not scroll back)

I don't know about you, but I get annoyed when I'm following a conversation and I get to a (1 Reply). Or (2 Replies) or whatever. I usually open them in a new tab to see how the conversation ends.

BUT NOT ANYMORE! This script is based off my visual suggestion I made here . While this doesn't quite act the same as the video I made, it's essentially the same.

So, whenever you see a (1 Reply) or (2 Replies), you will be able to click those links and the background will darken and you'll see the replies from that link right on the same page. So no reloading and all that. Just be aware that no other scripts will work on replies that fade in. So if you see a youtube video link on a reply there, and you use the script to play them right on the page, that won't work. But that's not a huge deal.

Also, some reply strings are very long, and for the long ones, it will take a bit of time to load it all. Still, it's faster than opening a new tab or clicking the link, reading it all, then going back to the original page.

To close out of all the replies that fade in, simply click anywhere on the darkened background.

You can even open the reply box and comment to people on the replies that fade in.

I really just made this to make the forums easier to use, since you often get the (1 Reply) links in the forums. But this should work all over the site. EXCEPT on deviations that load using AJAX and the /x/randomcraphere URL's. But there wasn't much I could do about that.

To Install

This will only work in Firefox and it's Greasemonkey. Sorry Chrome users, but I couldn't find a way to get around the rather restrictive same origin policy.

But if you use Firefox and have the Greasemonkey extension, then you can copy this link and paste it into a new tab to install:http://electricjonny.com/code/fast_replies.user.js

If anyone figures out how to make it work, by all means, feel free to edit this script and upload it for Chrome users to work.

Let me know how you like it, and anything else

For people who don't like the darkened background, and want something that blends in a little better, you can install this version:http://electricjonny.com/code/fast_replies_blended.user.jsIt was made by the (much more talented) =nuckchorris0 . It will load the replies right on the page and look like all the other replies. No way to remove them, but you don't really need to do that

Well I think I found it from an old backup, although it doesn't look the same.  Was this used in conjunction with the first script?  Here's what I have, at least fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/201… if it doesn't work I can try to get it once my site is back up.

What a shame, it doesn't work. And, even worse, the first one doesn't work too (I could download it and install, but after clicking (1 Reply) it just acts like normal link; in this case it doesn't do nothing after clicking)

Oh shit, you're right.  Greasemonkey recently updated and said there was some changes to certain things I use here, so I'd guess that would explain it.  I'll try to get it working later.

Found a bug, of sorts. Nothing major, nothing serious at all, in fact; but i thought i'd tell you anyway. (Also, this is about the custom, in-line version you made for me.)

When i'm on someone's userpage and click to load the hidden reply, and then post a new comment on said profile, this new comment of mine gets shown twice. Once where it belongs, and a second time added to the original comment that had the (1 Reply) link that i clicked. It's only a display glitch though, as the comment "disappears" as soon as i reload the page.

Heh, so this is a problem/bug with how things display after replying to a comment thread? Heh, well this was/or at least intended/thought about and not considered afterwards.

So to put it shortly, thank you for the bug, but I very do much not to intend to fix it. Sorry I tend to think of my scripts as "Install this, and you get what I say. Nothing more, nothing less". To do more than that, well, would require fucking fuck tons of my brain thinking. So not sure you can expect any change...

No dramas man, i didn't expect you to fix this. After all, it does not impact the functionality, so…

Aw I don't know how the browser or whatever deals with those symbols either ah well I will just open it in a new tab when that is the case, and such

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

electricjonny In reply to namenotrequired [2011-01-16 19:23:26 +0000 UTC]

It may have something to do with how I'm grabbing the page. GM_xmlhttpRequest({ and stuff. Although I don't quite know how to do it better. Well maybe, but it would be a pain to code

This looks awesome Jon!! Haven't tried it since I'm Chrome... but the preview and idea look great!
If you know of someone who manages to get this working in Chrome, could you let me know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

electricjonny In reply to exarobibliologist [2010-10-02 14:11:14 +0000 UTC]

I spent a few hours trying to get it working in Chrome, and while I could get it to stick some replies on the popup, it spit it out as if you weren't logged in, making it impossible to comment.

I can try making it work later, but since I don't use Chrome and don't know much about it, I'm not too optimistic. But if someone out there does make it work, I'll let you know

Although I JUST updated this so when you close out of the popup, the page scroll back to where you were. So you can reinstall if that sounds like something useful
