Part of the process of becoming a better writer is realizing that you suck. Every writer has to go through that process if they want to improve; you spend hours upon hours laboring over a story, or poem, or screenplay, and then you read over it, and you realize that it sucks. It can always be better. If you don't have that moment where you realize, "Man, I suck at this," then you can never get better. Sometimes, authors get so full of their success that they don't realize that they aren't as good as they think they are - and they never are - and it takes someone else to tell them how much they suck. If they then get defensive of what they've already done, then they will go on sucking, instead of improving and continuing to suck but not quite as badly. Writers can't afford to have an ego.
