Description A representation of a painting from my RWBY fan fic ARGT. A description written by Dr Halcyon Traveler:

"Although today there exist only four great kingdoms, many more have been founded and destroyed, most lost to the grimm, enemy nations, or simply fading away over time. At least according to legend, this was not the case with the empire of Lazai. The legends of Lazai vary greatly, especially since the story itself spans two continents, but I have been able to piece together a relatively complete version, as told by the villages of Southern Mantle.
According to the story, Lazai was founded by a Witchman of the Broken Isles, a now-extinct tribe of sages and magicians. It is said that this man was exiled from the Broken Isles along with five followers, because they had attempted to break the greatest law of their people: never to disturb the rest of the dead. This Witchman, however, was determined to conquer death itself, and so he and his followers crafted a great key of unimaginable magical power. This key, according to the stories, could unlock the gates that barred travel between the worlds of the living and the dead. Using the key, the man brought to life an army of a thousand great warriors, who pledged themselves to his service for returning them to the land of the living. Using this army, he conquered most of the region surrounding Vacuo, before expanding east towards Vale. However, the source of his power was also his downfall.
The Witchman, now the Emperor Lazaia, continued to use the Great Key, and every time his soldiers fell in battle, he would return them to life. There was a cost to this, since the Witchmen had not forbade this practice without reason. As the balance of life and death was disrupted, something else crept through the gates, not from the land of the dead, or the living, but somewhere outside of the existence known to mortal men. As the Emperor continued to  use the Key, this phantasm grew, and coalesced into a great monstrosity: The Leviathan of Lazai. This great monster tore Lazai's capital asunder with a nightmarish ease, and lay its armies to waste. In the wake of its sheer hatred towards all life, clouds of great winged grimm filled the skies, devouring those that escaped the Leviathan itself. In a single day, the Empire of Lazai was brought to ruin.
For a time it seemed that the Leviathan would exterminate all of humanity, but it came to pass that a great warrior, whose origin is unknown, faced the monster in defense of civilization. They fought for a year and a day, until finally, in southwestern Mantle, the warrior slew the horror. As it screamed its death cries, the Leviathan was turned to stone, and its body became the lone peak that is now known as Mount Madness.
This painting, "The Last Warrior", is the work of famed post-Great War painter Amadeus Finch, and depicts the battle between the two foes. Upon further research, it appears that the Leviathan has been scaled down in comparison to its size in most versions of the myth, likely to give more focus to the warrior themselves*.

*In one account of the story, it is said that the warrior went on to found the tradition of Huntsmen and Huntresses. Upon their deathbed, they asked that all details of their person be erased from all records, and so we do not know their name, race, or even sex. This is likely why the warrior is depicted here in full armor.
