Description "When the very first baby laughed for the very first time, the laughter broke into a thousand pieces and that was the beginning of fairies", they say. Well, it it is the laughter of babes that spawns the fairy, then it must be the dying scream of a convicted criminal who spawns creatures like these.

My entry for the fifth round of *StrictlyComeDrawing contest. The subject this time around was fairy.

Faerie. Fae. Changeling, call it whatever you want. Plenty of stories and myths surrounds these little beings, but the favoured ones are those who describe them as beautiful and colourful little humanoids, good-natured and playful with gorgeous wings in a multitude of colours. Well, lately I haven't been in the kind of mood that sparks the magic needed for those kinds of drawings. So instead I decided to turn to my own brand of "fairy", that I had created for my "Apokalypsis" universe. Basically, a fairy gone very, very wrong.

These little critters, which I just called "Graveflies" (I never got around to make another name, so it kind of just stuck! ), was originally just tiny firefly-like creatures who were drawn to battlesites, and the death there. Innocent and harmless. But after a while I decided that I might as well do something fun with them, and developed them thus:

(Imagine it's being told by an old, wrinkly scholar with funny glasses!)

Graveflies are small, human-like beings with a grey, sickly complexion. Their colouring range in anything from pale grey to almost black, with deep-set eyes that glows with an unearthly, and dangerous, glow. Their limbs are elongated and often thin, with long fingers and claws. They are usually androgynous in appearance, being neither fully male nor female.

As it is, the graveflies don't reproduce the regular way. They are born out of blood spilled on the earth in anger or hatred, and is therefore a common sight on battleground. They also feed on the flesh of dead humans and animals, the more rotten the better. Some insist that they not only feed on that which is already dead, but that they also will hunt and attack smaller creatures, dragging them away for storage. It's unclear whether this is true or not, but small babies and children are rarely left unattended, and especially not after dark.

Their body and wings are partially covered in either scales or fur, rarely both. This is the same colour as their hair, which is usually long and sleek in appearance. Their wings are unusually fragile and wispy (like a cobweb) looking, almost seeming to glow. Their wings are actually an extension of the graveflies spirit, and it is this magic that allows them to fly, even though the wings would not normally be able to support their weight. This also makes them quite vulnerable, as if your damage, or remove their wings, the gravefly will die. Their wings also grows smaller with age, signifying the approaching death of the creature.

The graveflies prefer the time after the sun has set, and thrive in misty or foggy weather, but they do not like rain.

I was actually planning on finishing this during the weekend, but since I had no internet (and forgotten to download the photo I used for reference), I couldn't. On Monday I got desperate, and did my best to finish the sketch without the reference. It didn't go too badly, although some parts could've been better. So this only left me with three days to finish this, and with having to go to work and all, lets just say that it was difficult! I've been working almost non-stop at this, trying to get it just right. I wanted a drawing much darker and "horror-like" than what I usually do, which I suppose doesn't say much when you consider the sugar I usually produce!

I love fairies, and they're fun to draw, but sometimes it can get a bit much with all the usual stuff. Most people seem to overlook the "darker" side of the fae-folk, for instance they're often associated with death (or are dead themselves), which is one of the many aspects that I dug into for these guys! This is actually the first time I've drawn any of these, which makes me super happy! Finally, they don't only exist in my mind!

The picture might look a bit dark on some monitors, as mine looks to be somewhat on the bright side. So if it's too difficult too make out, please brighten the monitor when viewing.

Urgh, exhausted, must go die in the corner over there.

From an artistic standpoint I think you could improve on your anatomy, mostly in the pelvis and shoulders. Those are trouble areas for any artist, and learning how to draw the joints and connections and how people move with them is really challenging. I like your concept behind these creatures. They sound totally adorable (and evil), changelings on a whole have always been extremely cool, and your "gravelives" sound just as interesting.

Great idea and great start to your fae race.

Thank you very much! I definitely need to improve my anatomy, although in this drawing I didn't go for a strictly "human" anatomy, which didn't exactly make it any easier to do. I've found that using stock-photos has helped me a lot, but there is still a lot to learn!

I was trying for a cobweb-look for them, I'm glad you could tell! I wanted them to stand apart from the rest of the creature, sort of a "beauty among the beast" kind of thing, although I worry that they're a bit too bright.

0_o That's the scariest thing I've ever seen from you. Terrifying aside, I am in total love with the wings.

I'm not sure why it's so scary, but I think it must be some combination of things. Excellent job with the expression, you've got almost a horror anime look to it.

If that's a Seelie faerie than I'm the queen of England. (Sorry, somewhat vague reference. If you're really into fae mythology than you'll get both the reference AND sarcasm. XD)

I think its excellent to see some focus on the darker side of the fae. In fact, the pretty flighty rainbow ones are the super minority in traditional uncutesied fae mythology. And probably more accurate.

Excuse me while I go put on a suit made of cold iron (another fae reference. Sorry. XD)

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-25 21:09:28 +0000 UTC]

Unseelie, most likely! But yeah, not the fluffy garden-kind variety of fae, that's for sure! I'm glad you think it's scary, I tried to make it as creepy and unsettling as I could, I love that kind of mood! Although you wouldn't know it when looking at my other pictures!

galacticpink In reply to elila [2009-06-25 21:16:38 +0000 UTC]

The closest you tend to get is Eclipsed Moon. She manages to pull creepy off pretty well. But she just doesn't have that "unsettlng" factor this thing has.

And unsettling is the perfect word! Not as much scary as that kind of scared drawn out "eeeeee" noise. That fits this fae very well!

I'm so glad you know the fae kingdoms. I wanna smack people who claim to be fans of the fae but don't know the words (fans of faeries/fairies is different. When I say faeries I mean something different than "the fae". So many people don't realize traditional Elves are of the fae but not faeries. Gotta love Celtic mythology, ne? XD)

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-25 21:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, yeah, Eclipsed Moon is a bit on the dark side! 's why I love her so!

I've always been interested in all kinds of fantasy and mythology, and I like to keep my facts straight. I still don't count myself an experts on things, but I do like to have some at least a small sense of "what's what", and at least get my descriptions right! I can't stand it when someone insists they have ultimate knowledge on something, and get it all wrong!

Oh my gawd. The conversation I had a few months back.

"It's Chibi Chibi, NOT Sailor Chibi Chibi." *whacks the idiot upside the head* She IS a Sailor Senshi, and she IS Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon in the anime. At least on merchandise! >_< (I don't recall ever hearing the the term "Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon" in the anime actually being said.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-26 07:29:36 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, well, more people would benefit from doing research!

She is refered to as Chibi Chibi Moon at least once that I know of in the anime. Episode 196, when she appears in a bright ball of pink light, Eternal Sailor Moon exclaims "Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon!". So yes, she is Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon in the anime.

And apparently her name had been changed for the re-launch of the manga, so in the new print she's Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon there too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

galacticpink In reply to elila [2009-06-26 16:08:34 +0000 UTC]

I've heard that she is only Chibi Chibi Moon on a sticker set released in the first print of one of the the new manga. I could be wrong but I've heard they don't use the "Moon" part in the manga itself. I shall one day own both the original and rerelease of the Japanese manga, though. I found an American place that sells the new Sailor Moon AND Pocket Monsters Special so they are like my new favorite online store. XD (The main difference between this place and ordering from Japan is shipping is actually SANE. XD)

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-26 21:25:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've never seen it for myself, so that might be correct. All I know is that they included Chibi Chibi Moon somewhere, a sticker might very well be right!

Which store is this? I must know!

Some of them might be "out of stock" but they can order them from Japan for you and you still pay American shipping. You just have to wait longer to actually get it (about 2 weeks). And its only the rereleases.

It's where I plan to get my copies of the Pretty Guardian manga.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-27 08:36:07 +0000 UTC]

Cool! Of course, shipping from America might still be a bit steep for me, but it's good to know!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

galacticpink In reply to elila [2009-06-27 23:24:13 +0000 UTC]

For one manga, which I ran me about $8.00, the shipping was $16. The Pretty Guardian manga are the same cost as the Pocket Monsters Special I get, or at least the early ones are. So you'd be paying $16 if you only wanted to order one. I think it would save money if you ordered more than one at a time. That's why it's good to check out the final price before you click "Confirm Order". XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-27 23:35:04 +0000 UTC]

I imagine shipping might be a bit more over here, sadly. One of the many reasons why I always check the final price, shipping to Norway is usually ridiculously expensive!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

galacticpink In reply to elila [2009-06-27 23:37:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Yeah. America might stink in many places but its probably the easiest country in the world to ship to. For most things, anyhow. XD

I didn't realize you didn't live in America. My bad. XD

I get manga from them every month. Next month I think I'm gonna get Pocket Monsters Special Vol. 3 and Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Vol. 1. :3

elila In reply to galacticpink [2009-06-27 23:44:08 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, no problem, it's not like country is of much importance online! Norway in general has some really stupid rules and regulations when it comes to shipping, so I always have to be careful when shopping online. Breaks my heart, it does!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

galacticpink In reply to elila [2009-06-27 23:49:47 +0000 UTC]

I hear the Pocket Special manga has translations (into English, no less!) in Singapore, but apparently they have super stupid shipping rules there. All I know is I can't order from there. >_> So I'm stuck with translating the Japanese version of this manga myself. *sweatdrop*

So yeah. Although I know I don't have to worry about ANY censorship this way. But I know about stupid and/or plain annoying shipping laws. XD
