He's quite easy to keep actually.
Housing - heated vivarium or tortoise table (maximum £200 for all housing setup including bulbs anf food bowls etc but price depends on size)
Food - Lettuce, Vegetables, fruit (not too much), herbs & dandelions (needs calcium powder 2-3 times a week) and a constant supply of water.
Bedding - wood chip (small - £6 a bag) and a handfull of straw for sleeping under

He needs excersise everyday so I just put him in the garden and keep an eye on him for about an hour. He has a rabbit run in the back garden for when its sunny.

The only hard part is breeding and hibernation. Breeding is expensive due to needing extra vivariums and possibly an icubator and you can't tell if a females pregnant (Luckily I only have a male tortoise). Hibernation is extremely worrying, they need to be about 10yrs old and practically obese to survive the winter, If you have a large tortoise table heated at 30 degrees you wont need to hibernate, just keep him warm over the cold months.

If you get a tortoise stick to the 'Common' breeds from the mediteranean such as a horsefield, They don't need all the paper work and breeding records that you need for the fancier breeds

Hope that doesn't bore you to death

ohhh wow theres alot more to consider than i thought haha but i am still tempted

the actual keeping of them is extremely reasonable

ooooo exciting i shall have a think its either a fish or a tortoise to keep me company through college

I've had fish all my life, My tropical fish caught a disease and died and my current fish are a bit boring...
I'd say a snake would be alot easier... A garter snake or a corn snake? There only 3ft long (max)and need feeding once a week. When tamed they're really sweet XD (thats if you don't mind pinks in your freezer)
I'm not allowed one though til I get my own place to live

Or (personal favourites)
Bearded dragons or geckos
beardies are really easy to tame and if you don't mind bugs easy to feed... Geckos are fed every other day on small crickets and they barely come out of there 'den/hut' if you breed them, Baby geckos bite... BE WARNED!

If you have the time to save extra cash I'd deffinately suggest the tortoise, and go for a large viv and get either 2Females or 1male and 1female (munch is a bit lathargic on his own-he needs company after buying the essentials theyre pretty cheap to keep

Rocks are very obedient...

I only know because I want every animal I see so I just learn about them, I'm going to study biology and reptiles in college or university after 6th Form because I want to be a Reptile breeder after schools finished, alot of money in it as fancy breeds can fetch £200 per animal

Well thats the aim , My dads offered to pay for university but I don't think I'll go with the problems in finding careers at the moment so I think Self employment is the only option...

And thank you

I fed a salmon boa in the shop... Not that inteligent... He bit himself Deffinately suggest the gecko though, Fat tailed geckos are really lazy and easy to tame

the only thing to worry about is the live food, the crickets escape all the time. But if you don't mind touching the bugs its all fine

Aww, yeah out guy is such a trooper I mean he always shows up...no clue on his age though we gice him some lettuce and her goes on his way.

ElinsPhotography In reply to crowburd [2011-07-23 20:16:03 +0000 UTC]

Is she/he tame? If you could get close enough to measure her shell growth you could estimate an age

he is wild...but not afraid of us, haven't seen him yet this year...we are a bit worried, but he will show up...dad thinks he his at least 30 or so because that is how long he has been showing up while my dad has lived in this house.
