Description I'm trying to teach myself how to draw cats properly. I recently acquired an illustrated cat breed encyclopedia and have been drawing from that. The rest of my drawings are just gestures and aren't good enough to post. I like this one though, I think it's cute.

Oh, and this is a Manx which is a tailless breed of cat. ^-^

as yammyqueen said, the rump is more rounded - the stump of the tail isn't so much a tuft of fur as a small bump on their rear end.

back legs should be slightly thicker at the thighs as well - Manx cats have no tail, but their spine is different, and their back legs are built for balance and power. (their rump is also higher than most cats, making it look like they're constantly crouching on their front legs)

Wow, thanks for the feedback! I didn't know the manx's spine was built differently. Thanks a bunch for all of the information!

Nice anatomy -- I'm experimenting with the art myself, except I'm using rats as my "test subject". Cool drawing.

Oh, and I love your Remy avatar, by the way.

Thanks! I can't wait till the movie comes out! I've always wanted a pet rat but my grandmother refuses to see me if I buy one. >_<

No problem! And yeah -- me neither. I'm an absolute geek for this film; I've seen the teaser over 40 times and everything.

I hope that, one of these days, you'll get to own a rat -- they're really wonderful little critters!

I see my cat do that every morning.

Nice job capturing the moment. I have always wanted to animate a cat doing this in 3d

Thanks. Do you have a cat rig? There's one floating around the internet somewhere.

Nope I don't

I think your right..... Isn't that a huge cat rig?.... meaning its mounatin lion or something like that?...

Id like to make a cat rig maybe that will be my next project I'll try and fiddle with some ideas today so I can figure out the best way to rig a cat. Do you have any pointers or good tuts you may have come across that might be helpful for creating a cat rig.

I think im gonna get that Muybridge book on how animals move etc. Ill study the heck out of that and a cat book I have. Its a cat encyclopedia I think...... Thanx for the inspiration. and keep up the great work.

How's your short coming along? Any progress you can show?

I believe it is a large cat rig. It's make out of blocks though so I guess you might be able to adjust it's proportions to make a smaller cat. I dont know anything about rigging, so I can't really help you there. The only thing I can do is suggest that you use the Setup Machine. Everyone at AM who's needed an original character for their short used it and has nothing but positive feedback. I dont have it myself, but the guy who's setting up my character does. So far everything's working great.

The Muybridge book is a good idea. You can also visit the BBC Motion Gallery to get some video clips of cats doing various things. Thanks for the compliment!

My shorts coming along alright. I have to turn in a layout pass on the second 3rd of the project today. I will post the video once the whole thing's been through layout. ^-^
