Description This is a personification of the flower Carlina acanthifolia. It grows in some low mountains in France and was used in many ways in medieval times: as a cure against plague, as food in period of scarcity, as a weather-forecaster (the heart closes when rain comes) and the leaves were used to card the wool. It is now a protected variety.
It goes by many names in France, one of them refering to Charlemagne (an angel presented him with the plant to cure his army from the plague), but my favorite is 'cardabelle' (heart of the beautiful girl).
I personified the plant by a blond shepherdess with healing hands and hair curling when bad weather comes. I wrote a poem about her. This is in French, sorry for all of you who don't speak it.
It tells about her many powers and how she refuses to marry a soldier, as she wants to remain free. As he becomes more insisting, she runs away on the mountain and turns into the flower.

Connaissez-vous la belle,
L’orpheline bergère,
Tête d’or, jupes vertes,
Et qui carde la laine
De son peigne, l’experte,
Et de ses doigts amènes ?

Là, un soldat d’Helvie,
La voyant au fuseau
A d’elle grande envie.
Il lui tient ce propos :
« Belle, laisse que moi,
Je te prenne pour femme ! »
Las ! La jeune bergère,
Lui refuse son âme :
« Tu ne peux m’enlever,
Car je n’ai pas de père ! »

Si grande liberté !

Connaissez-vous la belle,
L’orpheline bergère,
Cheveux blonds, jupes jade,
Qui pour les démunis,
Fait une soupe fade,
Mais qui bien les nourrit ?

Et le soldat d’Helvie,
L’œillant à sa marmite,
A d’elle grande envie.
Il plaide et il s’agite :
« Belle, laisse que moi,
Je te prenne pour femme ! »
Las ! La jeune bergère,
Se soustrait à son brame :
« Tu ne peux m’enlever,
Car je n’ai pas de père ! »

Enviable liberté !

Connaissez-vous la belle,
L’orpheline bergère,
Crins dorés, jupe olive,
Qui va, soins prodiguant,
Et fait que tous ils vivent
Qu'hier on disait mourants ?

Et le soldat d’Helvie,
Jugeant ses cataplasmes,
A d’elle grande envie.
Il brûle d'enthousiasme :
« Belle, laisse que moi,
Je te prenne pour femme ! »
Las ! La jeune bergère,
Ne redoute aucun blâme :
« Tu ne peux m’enlever,
Car je n’ai pas de père ! »

Si fière liberté !

Connaissez-vous la belle,
L’orpheline bergère,
Chef soleil, yeux tilleul,
Qui prédit les tourmentes,
d’un cheveu, oui, d’un seul,
De sa toison charmante ?

Mais le soldat d’Helvie,
Face à elle et son pâtre,
Veut lui prendre la vie.
Voyez sa fureur croître :
« Belle, point n’as le choix,
Je te prendrai pour femme ! »
Las ! La jeune bergère,
Plus vive qu’une flamme,
Sur le causse élevé,
Volant sur les bruyères,
Échappe à la supplique,
Et court, pour s’échapper,
Sur les chardons qui piquent.

Si chère liberté !

Le soldat la poursuit,
Sur les hauteurs du Mont,
Dans le vent, devant lui,
Bouclent ses cheveux blonds.
Et voilà la tourmente,
Qui se lève, et la neige
Accompagne la pente
Et leur fait un cortège.

Connaissez-vous la belle,
La si blanche bergère,
Qui pour rester toujours,
Auprès de ses béliers,
Refusa tout amour,
Quitta vie et beauté !

Oh pure liberté !

Connaissez-vous la belle,
Plante porte-bonheur,
Qui soigne et qui nourrit,
Cardant de ses piquants,
Et dont jamais ne meurt,
l’art de prédire le temps ?

Sur le causse elle pousse,
Oh ! Que sa vue est douce !

I really love the color/texture in this one! The muted color makes me feel peaceful and the texture makes the painting look more aged

Thanks! It was really hard for me to mute the colors, I am used to paint with bright tones. Here, I added a gray layer with low opacity on top to achieve the muted colors. It was quite a lesson about colors!
Now, I feel I'm more able to paint with muted colors from scratch

Le merveilleux m'a toujours attirée, par cette magie ambiante et parfaitement "normale", qui ne dérange ni ne surprend les protagonistes. Merci pour votre aimable commentaire !

Huh, what a cool depiction and I learnt something new today! Thanks for bringing this information by me I always like to know about medieval medicines / useful plants for my own novel. If you ever decide to translate that poem into English I'd love to read it. I won't put it through google translate cos that butchers everything

my-sword-is-bigger In reply to ElissaKarminakria [2018-12-28 00:02:14 +0000 UTC]

Ah, right xD

Mine is just fantasy, set on an entirely different planet with different seasons. (The poles are tilted toward the sun, so summers are ridiculously hot with no nighttime and winters are freezing with no daytime). And it revolves around a culture of seafaring peoples who migrate. In terms of influence, I mix so many things that it's not really close to anything, but they're influenced by Dark Ages cultures (such as the Norse), the militaristic nature of Sparta, and Polynesian seafarers. All very different from one another haha

Hi there, I came across this lovely piece thanks to ProjectComment .

I love your idea of creating a character based on this flower and incorporate all the different meanings attached to it, and I feel like you captured it all perfectly and in such an mesmerizing way.

There’s definitely a storybook feel here but the crisp black lines with textured coloring also make me think of stained glass art. The overall style really lends itself to the medieval origins of the plant’s uses. I love how organic the shapes you’ve used look. There’s almost something eerie about them in how free they are, almost like everything is moving with a mind of its own. My eyes keep going back to the hair because of how interesting the flow of it and the shapes in it are.

Something that stood out to me as a little out of place though, was the lines on the sheep. They don’t quite match the rest of the piece in how thick they are. I think that making them the same thickness as the lines on the woman would help the sheep blend in better with the rest of the drawing.

This part might just be me, but the shading on her cape also feels off. In the rest of your piece, lines are used to indicate an edge of something, which is used really well in the folds of the dress, but on the inside of the cape, you have line-less shading that doesn’t seem to be representing any folds. It might look more natural to give the cape some slight ruffles at the ends and make the flow of it less straight.

That was just one little thing I would have done differently but it doesn’t detract from how beautiful the overall piece is. Really makes me wish I could understand the poem. From the description you gave and what I was able to translate, I’m sure it’s as magical as the artwork itself. Keep up the wonderful work!

Hey there! Sorry for the late answer.
I do thank you for your comment from the bottom of my heart.
Your feedback is fair and I perfectly understand your point about the cape and about the sheep (backstory: I drew the sheep too small and enlarged it, hence the bolder lines, and left it that way because of my laziness... and obviously people notice! I should always refrain from being lazy).
I appreciate you took time for this constructive comment and I hope you'll enjoy great holidays!

I’m definitely guilty of enlarging things without changing the lineart as well. It’s so tempting to leave it that way since it’s already drawn, so I understand the lazy artist struggle, haha.
Thank you, happy holidays to you as well!

and the atmosphere and the expression on her face suggest a morbid tone!
