Description Wolf Masks
Ballpoint and color pencils on paper, 5x11cm, 2008

Well... as you see in my Three Classmates series, I like masks and those are variations of wolf masks refering to Japanese masks for Kagura. Somehow there's fox masks but no wolf ones. Guessing because fox are familiar of Inari (god of good harvest) while wolves themselves are Oh-kuchi-no-makami (Real god with big mouth), I'm considering to make the bottom one as real mask.

hmmmm you make a good point. I love the masks you did. have been looking for Japanese mask reference material and all i could find was Kitsune, wich useful was only half of what i needed. we should keep in touch.

Oh are you interested in Japanese masks too?
Maybe some people made wolf masks in the past but to see them, internet wouldn't be usefull... Maybe I'll go to libraly soon.

Some time ago i ended up playing a game named Legend of the Five Rings. Its based on Japanese myth, though rather loosely. The end result was that i decided to begin writing a comic following the adventures of a Kitsune and her Okame bodyguard as they travel and interact with the denizens of feudal Japan. As they were supernatural beings I decided to have them deal with the other supernatural entities that call Japan home. Oh and I have a special spot in my heart for Oni. though I don't fully understand them. Are they demons (daemons?) or Ogres?

Did you finish the comic? It sounds interesting.

When you get account for nico nico doga (it's like Japanese YouTube), you'll find many old tales about Okami and Kitsune by words "æ—„æœŹæ˜”ă°ăȘし(Japanese Old Tales)".

Oni aren't always evil. There are lot of stories showing they have good character in deep mind but just twisted somehow. You'll see the statues of the Four Devas treading oni -called Jyaki in this case- in Buddhist temples in here but they aren't bad existance. They are just so mischievous that the Devas must restrain them from running around their world and do some pranks.

so how do ogres fit in? or are they the ogres? do you have trolls in Japan? if so what are they like? as far as Kitsune and Okame they left seeking the Nihon Jin tribe in Colorado state. hmmmm maybe i should send you a copy of Cannibal the musical.

Post Script.

nico nico doga. what is the URL for it?

There are some kinds of oni. There do exists bad ones, but not all.
Also not all European mythcal creatures rank with Japanese ones.

I think your "Okame" should be spelled as Okami since the word is came from Ohkuchi-no-makami, which means true god of big mouth.

i don't claim to have any knowledge of such things.hence all of my questions. i have noticed a number of similarities between the various creatures of both Mythos.

They're great, i guess you could do it as a homage to that extinct japanese wolf you told me about some time ago.
