While the 4s are all about consolidation, the 5s are about an eruptive breaking of molds. The stability of the 4s grows unstable, and if we were comfortably settled with the previous cards we now go through a certain amount of pain and insecurity at having to adjust. The 5s are under the auspices of Mars whose somewhat violent energy is very appropriate to the dynamic of these cards.

In the fiery Wands Mars does wreak less havoc than in the other elements. Yes, there will be strife and confrontation, but it may be a healthy blow-out that clears the air. We stand up for ourselves and assert our will. In some cases the card may stand for a demonstration of skill and bravado, for some healthy competition and for meeting and overcoming resistance.

In the Raider-Waite deck we see a group of five men armed with staves who are brawling with each other. In the Toth deck the card is associated with the planet Saturn, the keeper of limitations and boundaries, in Leo, the sign of unlimited energy and creativity that will not be bound. The tension in this set-up causes frustration, and pent-up energy can manifest in violent and explosive ways.

I wanted to keep tapping into the fiery energy of this suit and show the dynamic of the card by choosing as its motive a banking fighter jet that is shooting a set of 5 tracer flares above a city in the mountains. I liked the contrast of the finely tuned piece of technology and machinery in the service of unleashing energy and destruction. It seems to embody the ambivalence of the card.

It could be uncomfortable, such as others hassling you, getting into arguments or having someone else’s personality clash with yours. It could also be invigorating as a competition or contest of some sort.
