I love Peridot green. It's warmer than emerald and the lightness reminds me of spring.

Thank you! It's a kind of jasper that they dye to enhance the color and matrix, but even though the stones have a lot of character I think!

You ought to use "discarded" designs more often!Β This reminds me strongly of your gorgeous "Poison" pendant (I believe that was the name).Β The veining in the more neutral jasper beads really compliments the same in the main green one without making the piece too busy, as does the silver framework.Β I really must compliment you on making dyed beads into something beautiful, as I also tend to dislike artificially colored stones, which so often end up looking like dressed up wads of fossilized gum.Β Here, though, the shape, setting, and size of the stone lets the green be truly luminous--it seriously looks backlit.Β

Thanks so much! I am really glad I could recycle the original idea into something fun!
You have a good memory: "Poison" was made using the exact same batch of stones. There's a small Chinese bead store just down the road from where I live, and they had a whole box full of blue and green cabs a while ago. I really went all out and out since theΒ stones didn't cost much more than 5 or 6 bucks apiece.
Had to snort at the "fossilized gum" comment - I know exactly what you mean. Would be a waste of expensive silver clay for some of the stuff that's out there...

Thank you! They do these jaspers in blue as well, and they also look pretty sweet. I think it's the complex and lacy beige matrix that really sets these stones apart, even though they are dyed...

Do you use a kiln to fire these?

Ellygator In reply to dragonladych [2014-07-26 13:08:35 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, yes I do. It's about 10 minutes at 1600F, though I set my kiln at 1595, just to be on the side of caution, because it's the shortest time/ highest temperature setting recommended.

Yeah, I rationalized mine as a multi-task tool: burn clay, melt enamels onto metal, anneal art glass beads, fuse and slump glass... You can have several good uses out of it.

Thanks so much! I would have loved to have little dyed jasper beads instead of the brown landscape jasper, but I couldn't find any, and I guess this works, too.

It is such a beautiful artwork. So harmonious. And seems to fit the name so well. Β I'm surprised that someone could -not- want this!
I like looking at extravagant jewelry but not to wear it myself...tho this, i would, haha if i could ever afford anything like that.

Thank you so much! The original design was to enclose an enameled engraving of Tolkien's monogram, but the commissioner opted to have it just as the monogram, not as an engraved glyph in an additional frame, and that actually worked really well. I'll post that finished piece sometime soon, too.
