The court cards are leaving space for a number of interpretations in a spread. Often they are read as actual people having an impact on the querent's life, who share characteristics of the element they are associated with and hold a certain social or familial "rank". However, they can also be aspects of the querent's personality that either define him or her or that are currently suppressed.
The Rider Waite deck shows us a young man or woman standing on a flowery meadow against a golden sky holding a disk up to their face and studying it intently. Behind them we see a small glade of trees and a low mountain. The Crowley Harris deck shows a young woman with ram's horns in a wood. She has both feet planted firmly on the ground and golden light shines up from the earth before her feet. She holds a crystalline spear with the tip pointing downwards and a large petalled disk that has the symbol of yin and yang complementing each other in its center.
For my own card I wanted to combine the element of Earth with the North and with the people who throughout history have probably shown the most interest in the material universe. Romans covered their territories in roads. The Spanish and British both founded empires in which the sun would not set, and even today Europe and its successor nations in the Americas and elsewhere have set the parameters of global capitalism, creating material possessions and the rules of money as well as the means to exploit the natural world.
In a spread the Daughter of Earth signifies a young, practical down-to-earth woman, who is generally reliable, stable and capable of realizing her plans. She tends to have a bit of a stubborn streak and won't be easily swayed from her goals. She is diligent, focused and deliberate and is very much in tune with nature, with work she can do with her hands and with her own body and its needs. She is both practical and creative and tends to readily intuit the material needs of others and take care of them.
For a relationship-related question the card may indicate that you are focusing on taking care of each others' physical needs. In a sexual relationship this could mean that you are ready to discover more about each others' desires or even a possible pregnancy. It could also mean that you are taking care of someone who needs practical support, perhaps in a health or financial crisis or in some other material form, or that you have friends who are ready to take care of you, because you need it.
If the card comes up for a business-related question it means that you are ready to get on with a job. You have a clear goal in mind and you are taking practical steps to achieve it. You will find support and encouragement from others and you should take a pragmatic stance in going forward. Be diligent and prepared to put in the hard work. Don't get side-tracked by castles in the air, but rely on what you can see, touch and measure.
If the card stands for yourself it urges you to be practical. Focus on what you can realistically achieve. Stay in tune with your physical needs and the kind of creativity that's in your hands rather than in flights of the imagination. Observe the here and now and don't disregard the facts and the fine print. You can also be sure that your intuition will guide you right, so be prepared to trust your gut.
If the card is uncovered in an adverse or blockage position it could mean that you are complacent, lazy and have a tendency to over-indulge. You could also feel overwhelmed by clutter and unimportant details and may develop a tendency to procrastinate. If you are moving forward you may be so stubbornly fixated on your own personal wants and goals that you disregard the needs of others and squander resources and opportunities.
