Description (2008) 2"x 2.5" for the silver pendant including bail, 19" for the overall length of the necklace.

Art Clay Silver (cut, sculpted, fired and patinaed), silver bezel wire, pure silver wire, banded agate cab, opalescent enamel, 22 gauge sterling silver wire and silver finding for the clasp of the necklace

I carved this design into a flat piece of Art Clay Silver, fired it, added the bezel to hold the central agate and then enameled all of the recessed areas with opalescent enamel. I then set the stone, antiqued and polished the silver and added the bail.

The enamel was a recent acquisition and has the most amazing pale blue over ochre shimmer, especially in direct sunlight, where it truly looks like liqid opal has flown over the pendant and pooled among the knotwork.

Thank you! I really love this piece for everyday wear, it's subtle, understated and elegant. And I know better how to carve outlines for enameling now. I used to smooth them down, but that's not the way to go...

Thank you! And yeah, agate seems a neglected stone at the moment. It used to be big for signet rings in ancient Rome and during Renaissance times.

The colours are just beautiful and the flowing designs just makes me think of water. This is really stunning! I love the details on the bail, really adds to the overall piece. Have you ever tried making your own clasps?
The persian chain works so well for this, It has a nice interlocking flow that mimics the knot work on the pendant.

May I ask what ID you used for your Full Persian chain and do you saw cut you rings? (Yes I know, bloody maillers! ) Some of your rings look to be pulling apart near the top of the chain, altho that might just be the image. I find FP to be a touchy weave to use when you have alot of weight hanging from it. Perhaps a Roundmaille or a Jens Pind would be able to hold more weight and still keep the flowing, interlocking tight round look if you ever made a larger pendant or for your panel clay work.

Oh sorry for the long comment.. i've got to stop doing that!

No, actually this is cool, because I'd have to say from the perspective of maturity of tools and knowledge maille is probably my weakest area. For one I only use wire snippers to cut the rings and knitting needels for mandrels around which I hand-wrap - none of it too sophisticated. I think my wire for this particular necklace was a 22 gauge and I used a size 5 knitting needle, so the rings are kind of weak for the diameter and gauge size. I guess the tight weave compensates a little, but still I've had one or two failures where I had to replace and re-close rings.

immortaldesigns In reply to Ellygator [2008-04-21 21:14:28 +0000 UTC]

You should see my set up, not too sophisticated aswell but it gets the work done!
I only use knitting needles too and up till 'bout a month ago I was "hand" coiling my rings too.

I've since made a crappy wooden stand that I clamp to my workbench. It's got a few holes drilled near the top which I slide a knitting needle into(one end of my needles are bent to form a handle of sorts). I bend the wire around the handle and then just keep turning till I've got long coils of rings. (It's so much faster than doing it by hand and it hurts less)
I use the cheapest saw frame I could find.. It really makes a world of difference if you can saw cut your rings.

I've had people buy full persian pieces and had the rings near the clasping pull apart. I'm sure it'd be ok if it was stainless steel but my saw blades won't cut it... The softer the metal the less likely it'll hold it's shape over time.

If you ever need any help with maille, just drop me a note.
