Description (2008) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop.

So far this is my personal favorite card of the Major Arcana, not so much because I have a particular affinity for the Hierophant, but because I am really, really pleased about how well my Dumbledore turned out with his gorgeous owl.

The composition is actually fairly close to the traditional image of the hierophant, who is generally depicted as an older man (often in priest-like garments, because in very old decks he is actually the Pope) who is blessing or instructing smaller figures arranged in front of him.

To use Dumbledore for this card was a no-brainer, because he is a guardian, guide and mentor to so many, he inspires loyalty and is a figure of respect, he leads at Hogwarts, where young witches and wizards first learn what it means to become a responsible and knowledgeable member of their society, and he truly represents all that is good and honorable in the wizarding world.

The Hierophant card represents the belief of the group rather than personal beliefs and it stands for the socialization of an individual into a group. Therefore the Hierophant is often the figure of a teacher or a mentor, who helps the idividual fit into the group or into society, by teachig them skills and knowledge, but also appropriate behaviors, norms and ethics.

When you draw it, it may mean that you have to examine your beliefs with respect to what others around you believe, that perhaps you should seek the guidance of a teacher or that you may be called on to mentor and help others.

I'd like to dedicate this card to who draws the coolest Gambon/Dumbledore I've seen so far and who convinced me to go with Gambon rather than Harris, which I am now really happy about.

Update: submitted to for her tarot contest.

Ah, I missed a card. Oh well, it was spectacular, I just didn't feel like repeating myself.

Only...I had to comment on this one - I love that owl. I dont know what it is, but it just screams "LOOK AT ME!"

I mean, dumbledore is well drawn, but there is something hypnotic about that owl...

While I am not a Gambon Dumbledore fan, I too have made my peace with the new and flawed Dumbledore - particularly as the books grow darker. You have captured Sir Michael and his subtle wickedness with stunning accuracy. Excellent work!

how did you do that frame thing it looks like you used black color on a multiply layer.... is that what you did or what was it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to dbrockwas [2008-03-31 19:57:04 +0000 UTC]

I used a very dark brown flood-fill for the background, then I layered the calligraphic pattern on top in white, reduced the transparency and copied it about two times changing the size for each layer. I then merged everything to the bottom layer. This template is the same for all Majors. I then import the drawing-file from a digital photo taken of the drawing and add the text and the number for each card.

dbrockwas In reply to Ellygator [2008-04-01 14:40:11 +0000 UTC]

what does messing with the transperency do.???...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to dbrockwas [2008-04-01 16:00:30 +0000 UTC]

It makes the layers more or less translucent, so you can see everything that's underneath. For example if I cross two layers they seem translucent white over the brown, but more white where they intersect, so that makes for nice effects.

I love this card the most out of all of them I think. I love Dumbledore because of his flaws rather than in spite of them. Too often when you read a book and you have the man who is supposed to be the father figure/ above it all male role model he is perfect. He does everything right and he does not falter. I love that Dumbledore does all of these things. The one thing he never does is stop believing in Harry and loving him unconditionally. He knew what was to come and he knew what Harry would face and he knew that Harry had to find his way on his terms or he would not succeed.

Dumbledore will always be my favorite character and when Harris died forcing the recast of the character it was difficult, but the story could not continue without him. It frustrates me to hear people talk about how they will never like the replacement, like Harris backed out of the role or something. I have no doubt that Harris would have been perfect for the part had he lived, but Gambon stepped into an epic role being played previously by a legendary actor and he was able to make it his own and still remain true to the Dumbledore in the books. I think that in the books to come we will see him continue to bring the character to focus and the story to its conclusion and make this series the classic set of movies it was destined to be.

You have captured the feeling of the character so well here. I really love this piece. Sorry for the mini rant I wish you could offer these as prints... we could buy a set of 4x6 prints and have our own decks Wonderful job as always.

Ellygator In reply to stampingqueen [2008-03-28 15:33:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Dumbledore. I very much agree with your character assessment. Dumbledore overcame so much, including his own arrogance and character flaws, but he is still depicted as human in the books, for example where he just can't resist touching the horcrux-ring, because his longing to see his sister is stronger than his sense of caution. I really love that about him. I also think Gambon will do a great job bringing the series to a close. In fact "his" Dumbledore is more desperate, short-tempered and rough around the edges than Harris' more serene and almost saintly version, and I think that will work well with the way Harry learns more and more about the shadows of Dumbledore and has his own frustrations with his adopted "father".

I am thinking that if publication fails I can self-produce decks to those that are interested. Production costs obviously would be higher, but I have found a place that can produce card-quality prints. I'll keep you in the loop about it.

It's really interesting because when you first look at it, it's all about Dumbledore. But the more you look at it, the more you get drawn in by the eyes of the owl. The lectern is almost a character in itself. Great job!

Traumhaft schâne Karte ! Ich habe mich besonders gefreut, daß Du Dich für die Michael Gambon-Version von Dumbledore entschieden hast, ich gehâre zu den verschwindend wenigen, die ihn als Darsteller besser finden.

Ellygator In reply to VivalaVida [2008-03-27 19:18:40 +0000 UTC]

Danke!

VivalaVida In reply to Ellygator [2008-03-28 10:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Ja, genau, ich finde Gambons Darstellung irgendwie menschlicher, nicht so erhaben. Ich mag auch diese "Bartfrisur" sehr.
