Description (2008) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop.

I was pretty sure from the start that Minerva McGonagle would make the High Priestess. I really just used the traditional imagery for the card, where she has a book in her lap and sits between a black and a white column with a veil suspended between them.

For the body and dress I used an image from

Traditionally the High Priestess symbolizes the wise woman, the protecress and the anima. She stands for inner wisdom, knowledge of the mysteries of life and death, patience, seclusion, independence and self-reliance, calm and serenity.

Minerva works a lot of her power and influence in secret and not necessarily through the official channels. She rarely has to stand up out in the open, but she will do so if pushed to extremes, like when she defends Sibyl Trelawney against Umbridge... Her animagus from as a cat works well with the femimine and lunar aspects of this card.

Again, I love how you can look at McGonagle's face from far away, (and myself without my glasses on), and just know it's her really great job on her dress. It suits her very well! And of course the shading of it is just perfect!Β

Thanks so much! I really had fun drawing her, the details of her dress were a nice challenge, and I was glad I found a pose that was so close to the traditional subject-matter for this card.

No problem! I'm glad to see someone take on challenges and actually follow through. It's a hard thing to do and not many stick with something like that, it indeed a project this big, congrats!

Ha, I've loved her since I first read the books... and thought her name was "McGonall"... Youth. Oi. I've always loved this actress, especially in 'Hook' as Wendy...

Thank you! And I agree. McGonagle was one of my faves in the books. I liked her mix of sternness and maverick anarchism...

You keep amazing me, Elly! Everytime you make a new card it always makes me almost speachless. The detail you put into every card, your explanations and the way you draw the characters, even the ones I have never seen you draw before, it's just amazing. I really love every single work of art you produce.

I love the ancient feeling you have made to this background. It reminds me of an ancient Roman Temple. It also goes well with the Art Nouveau style of the cards. The book is a nice detail too. It makes you think of a wise teacher. I also like the room in which she is sitting is so spacious.

How is work going, by the way? You are probably very busy. Sometimes I wonder how you are able to both give so many wonderful comments on other people's art, find time to post your own wonderful and beautiful art, go to work and now also work on getting your own business up and running. How do you find the energy? I'm really impressed!

Take care, Elly

Thank you! Actually having some time for art is kind of what keeps me sane. I really don't see that as work or as a chore, but as total relaxation, kind of like taking a nap. Afterwards I feel more energized. Work's developing all right at the moment. It's all a question of getting enough business for myself so I know my consultancy can stand on its own two feet and pay the bills. Once I reach that point I can move from my day-job and the load will get considerably lighter. Thanks so much for your good wishes.
