Description (2008) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop

This drawing is pretty close to traditional images of the devil card which typically shows Baphomet seated with a naked man and a woman chained to his throne.

Of course Voldemort is the devil-figure of the Potterverse, so he had to be the central focus of this card, and instead of an anonymous couple I decided to add the two characters to him who seem to be most under his evil spell during the seven books - Bellatrix and Wormtail.

Their two characters show very clearly two mind-sets that can lead to hell on earth for people: obsession and fear.

Bellatrix is obsessed with Voldemort and the power that he holds. She craves nothing more than his approval and perhaps his love - both of which prove elusive. Even though she goes to her death for him, in the end she has got nothing in return except 12 years of misery in Azkaban and a loveless marriage of convenience.

Wormtail is also chained to Voldemort, but not because of obsession. He is so terrified of his master, he betrays his best friends to keep himself safe and even seeks to bring back the man he most fears. In the end he is so warped and twisted that his last shred of human compassion only serves to kill him, a fate that he feared so much.

For the backdrop of the scene I chose the sea-cave where Tom Riddle brought his first victims as a boy, and I gave him a slightly more militaristic and brutal outfit than his customary flowing robes.

When drawn the devil card may signify that the querent is in the position of the devil or the position of the devil’s victims.

As the devil you will need to confront your shadow, examine your motivations and the way you treat others. Do you ask for too many sacrifices from others for your own benefit, power and gratification? Are you thoughtless, cruel or do you need to keep others small to feel powerful yourself?

As the victim you need to confront your fears or obsessions – what keeps you in chains and how can you break them?

In either case the Devil will show you things about yourself that you wish you could ignore or that you have suppressed.

Hi there!

I just gave my newest contest the green light, and I wanted to let you know that - since the theme of the contest is Playing Cards - I included this deviation in the news article (you can find that here ) as an example and illustration. I hope you don't mind!

Take care!

- Nina

Thanks so much! I had this idea for a long time, that Wormtail and Bella are kind of two sides of teh same coin of being a slave to something or someone.

yup, that's what I believe as well. in the end they're both victim to Voldemort's power. You've done well in portraying that!

My favorite part of this was how you chose Bellatrix and Wormtail to signify the ways of being enslaved to the power of the 'devil'. Voldemort looks simply chilling in the revamped robes.

Ellygator In reply to KLSADAKO [2008-07-11 13:34:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, it features very marginally in "The World", but I am not sure whether I can also do something with it in the pip cards.

You drew him so well it's freaky, he really scares you just from looking at him, my 4 year old walked by and said offhand ' he is a bad guy mama' so there you go, you get your message across even toa 4 year old, I love the design of the border! very well done, love all your black and white stuff

I FINALLY read the last Harry Potter book after holding on to it for a year without reading it. lol I didn't want the story to end so I figured if I didn't read it I could savor the story a bit longer. I am very happy that I read the last one. It was an excellent book!

This tarot card is wonderful!

Oh my! I admire your discipline! I read the last volume on the very day it first came out. Even took it to the hairdresser's appointment with me that I had on that day.

sevenwillow In reply to Ellygator [2008-07-09 02:42:28 +0000 UTC]

lol well I had it beside my bed for that year and well finally decided to pick it up one day and read it. I really was sad it was over but again, the book was excellent! Did you like the ending?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to sevenwillow [2008-07-09 15:58:39 +0000 UTC]

I did love the fact that the Malfoys made it with only minor damage. I had been really convinced she'd have it out for poor Lucius again and outright kill the bloke. But she just tortured him a bit before letting him go.
I did love the story for Snape (though could have stood to read more about him, and was sad about the undignified way he was killed - couldn't even give Voldemort a piece of his mind...)
The last chapter was a little odd to me. On the one hand I was glad to see how things had worked out, but it also read like a bit of fanfiction to me. LOL!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sevenwillow In reply to Ellygator [2008-07-11 01:47:16 +0000 UTC]

yeah the last chapter was a let down but at least we know they all turned out ok in the end lol....happily ever after eh?

I was sort of mad they killed off Snape. I would have preferred a face to face with Harry show down instead and Harry finding out about the deal Snape had with Dumbledore....Wouldn't this book be fun if it was one of those books where the endings are different depending upon which way you went in the book? My kids and I loved those books!

Ellygator In reply to sevenwillow [2008-07-11 12:54:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's time they brought out interactive books that wrote themselves based on the choices of the reader. I've seen it with improv drama, where the audience can influence the events on the stage, and it's so much fun!

Asarea [2008-07-07 09:31:12 +0000 UTC]

Voldemort was a must for this card - but I think the 'better' job to do was to choose Wormtail and Bellatrix, too. They make an excellent match and show the way you can be led onto with without being strong enough ...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to Asarea [2008-07-07 16:37:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I was really happy to have real characters, rather than the generic figures. And I really think most of the evil in the world happens because people lash out in fear (because their ideology is threatened by others, or because they think they are under attack by others) or because of obsession (with power, money, control etc.)

kasumiakiko [2008-07-07 04:41:44 +0000 UTC]

I love the craftsmanship and Voldemort is an excellent devil. Wormtail and Bellatrix was an odd choice for me though. I understand your reasons for the choice, however traditionally the man and woman represented Adam and Eve, which doesn't fit Bellatrix and Wormtail so well... Still, I'm a big fan of the collection.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to kasumiakiko [2008-07-07 16:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I see your point, though I guess the concept of original sin as shown by Adam and Eve would have molded less well to the HP universe.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kasumiakiko In reply to Ellygator [2008-07-07 17:09:16 +0000 UTC]

Very true. I would be hard pressed to think of an alternative. Still, Adam and Eve aren't used in all Tarot decks.
