Description (2008) 5 1/2" x 10 1/2" Pencil on Paper. Processed and framed in Photoshop.

The card opening the squence of Major Arcana is the Fool. It stands for beginnings, for wide-eyed curiosity and the way a child would see the world, full of wonder and oblivious to danger. The Fool signifies starting a new project or letting go of prejudices and taking a fresh and unbiased look at the facts. There is a certain danger of recklessness and lack of caution, but most fools seem to have a rather alert guardian angel.

The traditional card shows a young man in gaudy clothes with a knapsack striding forward oblivious to the fact he's stepping over the rim of an abyss. A dog follows him while another animal - with Crowley it's a crocodile - tries to bite him from the back.

For a while there I really wanted Gilderoy Lockheart as the Fool, but it wouldn't have been fair to the card. Lockheart is a fool, but a vicious fool who has lost his innocence long ago.

Eventually Colin Creevy came to mind. His knapsack is his camera, where he's storing his marvellous experiences at school. His wide-eyed and innocent enthusiasm makes him step into all sorts of dangers, he follows Harry around like a little dog, and still, until DH at least, his innocence also keeps him safe, as when his camera saves him from death from the basilisk.

Crowley's crocodile has become the basilisk, and the abyss has been morphed into a harmless flight of steps...

This is perhaps my favorite card. Just because it was the first one I saw and made me go, "umm... I NEED this deck!" Lol I love all of the little details especially the lip of he basilisk! It's amazing. Your just so talented Β I'm not very good with the meanings and Β symbolisms with the tarot, yet, but I do know a little and I'm very excited with the equality of the art and meanings. you make the two seem perfect for each other. I love the little "camera" for the knapsack Great job!

Thank you! I had quite a time settling for the first card, because the Fool really opens the deck. When I finally hit on this combination, I really thought I could pull it off, and JKR's story had the mythological richness to carry a traditional deck.

Chaobaby7 [2008-06-28 21:45:46 +0000 UTC]

Its lovely but I wouldn't have thought him a fool, a giddy kid yes, maybe Peter Pettigrew for the fool?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to Chaobaby7 [2008-06-29 09:50:24 +0000 UTC]

Well I've always seen the Fool as the wide-eyed innocent kid who can't tell danger from safety because of lack of experience and so much curiosity and enthusiasm. I never viewed the Fool as someone who makes foolish decisions by choice. I think Peter would have given the card a very negative spin. But there's where the interpretation of the cards becomes very personal. Different meanings for everyone...

It's incredible how you captured all of Colin's innocence in one pose....it's like I'm watching a black and white still of a deleted scene.
