Description Yay, more DeathBed art!! this was a express-drawing of the story's talking horse, Victor, for =dreamseerX who wanted to see what he looks like. Victor is a rather old, talking horse that Edgar liberates from a burning stable. He's got a rather interesting part in the story, and I love the way he talks... He's got a crazy Yorkshire accent, haha!! ^^ He loves arguing with Edgar and chewing on his clothes... X3 But he gets very offended when you call him old. Its a good way to make him run faster, call him old... XD

Hehe, I was planning to make a pic of Victor for a while, but I lacked descent ref pics, and its IMPOSSIBLE to draw a horse without good reference no matter how many turotials on horses you take. TT.TT The coat color and the pose will always mess everything up for you when you draw them. I had to pay a visit to a horse-riding academy I used to go to when I was younger, to get some help. And I got a lot!

Victor is a crossbreed of Netherlands Friesian and German Holstein breeds, with a twist of Brittish Thoroughbred. I came up with this mix after observing all the horse breeds and their features they had in the equine academy. I'm lucky I'm friends with one of the trainers.
I picked out those three breeds because they seemed to suit Victor's general features as I envisioned them: Victor is a good runner and a good jumper horse, but he's not built to draw a carriage or carry heavy loads.

So, I gave him the general, elegant stucture of the Friesians, which are very good for riding and running, as well as their full manes and tails and feathered hoofs.
But I mixed in the sturdy, heavy-boned legs and powerful hind body of the Holsteins, which are excellent jumpers. Arabians are even better, but their built it too small and they're too sensitive for the things Victor does.
Lastly, the Brittish Thoroughbred twist is visible in his head and running. Victor has the short, fine head of a Brit Thoroughbred, and runs like those spindly racing Brit horses you see on race tracks all over the world.

As for the color... that's another story entirely, hehehe. Horses can have TONS of different coat colors and each type has a different name. I had studied the most common types, and had narrowed my choices down to three types:
Liver Chestnut: 'Chestnut' is a variety of gold to dark reddish-brown coats, usually having a matching or slightly lighter or sometimes flaxen colored mane and tail. In short, its a variety of brown with hints of red, like chest-nut trees. Liver chestnut is the darkest variety, that looks almost black, and the highlights appear deep purple-red.
Steel Gray: Gray horses are often mistaken for white ones. Gray coats consist of dark skinned horses with a coat of black and white mixed together in various densities. A horse may look white, but if it has dark skin revealed at the ears and muzzle then its Light Gray. Steel gray is a very deep hue of gray on dark skin, with lighter highlights and black mane and tail.
Lastly, there was my last choice, which is the one I used: Blue Roan: Roan coats are actually Black, Bay or Chestnut coats with an admixture of white/light gray hairs(especially on the body and neck) which modifies the color.

So, Victor got a Blue Roan coat, which consists of a set of grays and blacks that appear to be dusty blue from a distance or under certain light, and black roan mane and tail. This type of coat, Roan, is pretty rare among horses, and it exists mostly among the Holsteins of a certain German sub-breed. And Blue Roan is even rare among Roan coats, since Red(Chestnut) Roan is more common. Therefore it was impossible for me to find a good reference picture of a Blue Roan horse to use as a guide for the coat coloring.... I went on improvising... But the outcome is pretty descent! Roans don't usually have white marks on their coat, but I made a small exception since Victor's a crossbreed...

Overall I think he's a pretty horse.

Phew...

My thanks to Peter Papaleos, from the Marathon Equine Academy, for showing me around the stables and introducing me to horses and breeds, and explaining to me the thing with coats. Also, my thanks to the three lovely horses that posed for me ^^ : Augusto the Friesian (who almost ate my shirt TT.TT), Phillimon the Holstein and Nico, that wonderful Thoroughbred who went into the trouble of being made to rear two times for me to see the structire of the legs ruring rearing. ^^ Love to horsies!!!

I admire your dedication and the amount of effort you took to develop your characters The horse's anatomy looks almost perfect except for the hooves (they seem rather small to me). Blue/grey horses are rare indeed *nods*

XD dedication indeed... I'm a silly little perfectionist who is always trying to make things perfect yet always ends up having detail or two wrong, lol. Thanks for the comment

XD I'm glad U like his pose, it was very hard on me to draw and on the poor horse that I used as a model, he was made to rear twice for me to get the gist of it! But hey, I gave him an apple later so I guess no hard feelings... ^^

I love it - the shading is particually nice - those front legs look a little small but i guess it's the perspective huh?

O.O
He's beautiful. Great work and great pose, though his left front leg does look ab bit odd. As if the perspective isn't right, but I might be wrong.
Like it though

The perspective is bad because I only had two chances to see a horse rearing... so I kinda improvised there. Meh...
