Description well, this took me a long time. maybe about 10 hours total, but spread that out over a month... i got stuck at the arms and didn't really know how to make them look right. they still look crappy to me, but at least they're there.

this will go down in the long history of lego creations i've made as the most delicate. by far. i made it by combining my brothers bionicle kits with my standard and technics sets. i was really upset to discover that the joints weren't stiff enough to hold the weight, so even though it's FULLY pose-able, i had to keep it on a stand. i edited out the stand in a few photos for the effect. gun turrets in it's chest behind the movable armor. i thought that was quite a trick!!

i never bothered to measure it, but it's quite tall! i started with the base plate in the hip and built onto it the legs and waist armor. then i built a cockpit on top of a strong base to hold the weight of the torso and started working on a frame for the arms shoulders and wings. originally, the arms shoulders and wings could all move independently of each other, but the individual components were too heavy for the weak joints, so i reinforced them by adding a sort of ball joint matrix in the back which connected the shoulder arm and wing pivot points without making them completely immobile. the only downside is that now, when the arm moves, the wing and shoulder move along with it. not so bad when you consider it's so delicate i can barely move anything anyway without all the armour peeling off it's skeleton.

i took a few pictures without any armour to show off the structure inside where i used all the bionicle bits. it was a tough build, but it's something I've always wanted to do, and since my last creation got destroyed when i moved, I've been itching to make something new! wish you guys could see this in person. it's alot more impressive when it's standing right in front of you!

lego maniacs forever! ^_^

oh, does anyone know how to make a preview image?

An easy set of arms to get is to simply adapt from the mecha that LEGO had made through its LEGO Creator line, as they had two EXCELLENT mecha sets that could provide you with the parts that you need.

it took me the entirety of my childhood to get my hands on that many legos, and i still don't have enough for everything i want to build. however, if there is something you would like to see me build, i can give it a try and send you a picture! ^_^

Hahaha... something i woulda also spent my time doing... this is righteous... my suggestion is prolly using more bionicle rods, while stiff they would also give more structure to the components like the torso that could hold up the body but dude.. i am digging the beam cannon rifle and the hidden gatling guns... very nice. I like the boosters too... Very nice rendition of a gundam. I gotta try building one in my free time. XD

i think you're reffering to technics pieces, but i think i know what you mean. if the cockpit wasn't a single molded piece, i probably could have managed to fit a rod straight through the center. it would have solved so many problems. unfortunately, it got stuck on that base piece, which was completely solid. nothing i could do about it by the time i got to the stage where i was having problems. if i ever do this again, it will be worth rethinking the procedure. i might start with the torso next time.

Ah good stuff. That would explain a bit. Cockpits are hard to make with lego pieces and that's understandable. And yea, i am referring to lego technics pieces. Altho not as firm or solid as lego blocks, they are lighter and give more flexibility with joints and can also be stiff with rods. Thats why i love them so much. Too bad it makes them very fragile... ><... Good luck if u try again. I'd love to see how it comes out.

years and years of experience. that's all it takes really. i haven't built anything new in so many years, but it's like riding a bicycle. your hands and mind just remember what they were made for, and in just a few hours, a giant robot is looking at you! ^_^

and not forget to have enough building ammo (my sniper rifle used up almost the 75% of my lego bricks )

ah, yes! i have a fairly substantial collection. i have two younger brothers who also got legos, but grew out of them over time, so their collections inevitably became assimilated by mine. it's still not enough to build the things i really want to build, but when i have more money, i'll be able to buy up some more legos and maybe get myself the resources i need to build the truely epic!

Oh my, the size of this thing is really impressive! It almost looks like a poseable skyscraper. Heck, it even has a support tower. I like your use of the Krana as a faceplate, too. And I must say, I'm beginning to fear for my little Black Knight!

That is an awesome Lego figure. My family used to have a big Star Wars collection to make the war machines. I remember that once you got off the instructions, it was like stepping into a sea of molasses. It took that much longer to finish.

You have my salute for keeping up with a project that big.

ember-reed In reply to Katsrae [2009-02-26 02:58:09 +0000 UTC]

it was even harder because of how delicate it became. i had to rebuild everything from the waist up atleast five times cause i couldn't put a support rod through the chest. the weight of the wings kept pulling it apart since the cockpit hatch wasn't actually attached to anything. i don't know if you can see it, but i put a single strip of tape over the tip of the hatch. because the anchor point was so close to the front, the leverage allowed that one piece of tape to keep the whole torso attached. it was a pretty good idea in the end since it was what allowed me to move it from place to place in one piece, and i didn't have to worry about it coming apart every time the floor shook.

Wow, that gundam is impressive! I mean, I can't even DRAW one, let alone construct one out of Lego xD The most detailed thing I made out of Lego was an American flag!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ember-reed In reply to JaqueRabbit [2009-02-25 21:07:05 +0000 UTC]

they're not that hard to draw, but i guess it depends on how your mind is structured. before i could do anything else, i could build with legos. it was my first passion. it became the foundation for everything else i learned how to do. so, when i draw, i do it in reverse compared to most artists. most people, when they draw, think of an image, and the draw it, adding little details as they go along. when i draw, i imagine all the little pieces, and draw every detail until the picture is "assembled." i'm only now learning how to do it the normal way since this spells death for any picture where expression is involved... that's why all my drawings are detail oriented. details are easy for me. expressions are damn near impossible.

i knew the second i posted that comment that you would find some way of turning it into an insult. you are so clever about it in fact that you've made it bullet proof as far as me trying to turn it around again. i wish you would use your talent with words for more constructive purposes rather than using it to so efficiently self destruct!
