Description A lithograph I did in school. This type of printmaking is pretty difficult considering all the chemical processes you have to go through for the block. Then when you draw the image it's with a grease pencil that you can not erase. So, you have to go with what you have, mistakes or not. Then you continue on with printing as many pieces as the image can handle.

Enjoy, and if you ever get a chance to do a lithograph. Do it, there's nothing like it.

I've never tried to do a lithograph

But this worked out so well!

The lines are so well defined and the printing leave such a unique texture that just adds to the feel of the elephant's skin from the lineart...

ah i love printmaking. never did a litho though. etching (knife and glass, not the traditional kind), linocut, and monotypes are what i did. all are fun as hell.

really nice piece!

printmaking is such a fun medium... its such a minority though in the artworld from what i can tell.

It really is, but most of it you have to access to stuff that you normally wouldn't. Though you can easily do mono's, collagraphs and woodcut/lino's at home. Albeit messy and more time consuming....but you'd first have to know how to do it I guess. xD

This looks pretty cool I'm not really sure that I got the meaning of litograph??

It would have been cool if the picture didn't just stop en the middle of nowhere (in the bottom) but went all the way down to the frame. Very cool to look at, it's an interesting perspective, like a spiral kind of. A bit like hypnose. Lots of details, but not over detailed. Cool

Well, basically, you draw an image on a lithograph stone that weighs about 20 lbs. You draw it with a grease pencil because the only thing that will print on the stone is grease....so in essense you could draw the image with your fingers because of the natural grease we have on our skin. So, while drawing, you can not ever touch the stone unless you want fingerprints in your image. So, the reason the image is cropped the way it is is because that's as large as the stone was. Once you draw the image you go through treatment processes. Before each print you have to water and ice down the stone then lay printmaking ink on it, then lay the paper on top and send it through the press. You can do this until the image is no longer stable, which is somewhere around 10-20 prints. Here's a better explanation. [link]

So, it's a very strange drawing process. It's much harder to put the typical detail in that you would a regular drawing.

Very awesome! I love elephants, so I'm partial to the motif as well. I never did get to try real lithography. I did wood cuts in school though.
I know it's school work, but if you ever feel like selling drop me a note, I think this is awesome!

If I can find another print, I will let you know. Somehow they were all confenscated by friends and family. *shifty eyes*

I wish I had done more than one litho. It's like a one chance in a lifetime opportunity.

Yeah, I know what you mean. One of the few reasons I'm sometimes sad I'm out of school. No more opportunities to try out nifty things without it costing a fortune for actually taking a class or *gasp* buy your own stuff.

you'll make new awesome stuff im sure

Ya, well I bought this spiffy cintiq recently so I could dabble and maybe be a real life illustrator one day. lol.

But yes, my list consists of a printing press for normal things like collagraphs, linocuts or whatever.
A Darkroom.
A Superfabulous Digital Camera.

Hmm...ya, that's all I want. It cost too much to be an artist. Or maybe it just cost to much to be a varied artist.

And, yes, I actually looked and I only have the one print. I thought I had two left, so I called my mom and sure enough she has that one too.

I never did a lithography and I suddenly want to make one because the whole process looks very interesting You were able to master it just fine: I bet the elephant's "wrinkles" were a bit tough to handle

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

emberleo In reply to Amimone [2008-06-16 16:09:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you just can't draw well or shade with a grease pencil. They are sticky and not smooth in the least. So, it's pretty difficult for sure. But yes, the process is very interesting. I wish I could do them on my own.
