This is my idea of writing a duel:
Seto Kaiba defeats Yugo with his Blue Eyes White Lightening Attack.
Yugi with a befuddled look on his face: Kaiba! I haven't even played my first card yet!
Kaiba: Too bad! Early bird gets the worm and I'm really in a hurry. So just cut your losses, move on, a new King of Games is in Town. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Yugi: Yah, if you say so. (Yugi looks at his friends and makes the universal hand gesture to tell the gang Kaiba's gone nuts.

You know something? I've never thought about that until I saw the-sweet make that comment. Why IS Gozaburo referred to as Kaiba's step father? I think they even called him that in the show. A lot of people call him that. The things I never really think about.

Maybe it's just a word misunderstanding? I also call my mom's husband 'stepdad'. He never adopted me officially, though...But yeah, it is really curious

For what you do, it's fine. If someone outside your family married your mom, then yes they are your step parent. So the way you use it is correct. Gozaburo didn't marry anyone in Seto's first family so it doesn't make sense to call him that. But I think you're right, it could just be a word misunderstanding.
You're using the right word "adopted" son, so it's cool. I was just thinking about the phasing. XD
