Description

The only requirement of this sketchbook assignment was to include a layer. So I ended up creating two pieces of art in one assignment. The assignment wasn't a theme, so I chose my own: "loss of innocence."

I'm going to give each kid a name. The boy wearing the black hat is Lester. The boy next to Lester is Henry. The boy wearing the green jacket at the bottom of the page is John. The girl looking up at John is Susan.

The scene takes place in rural America during WWI some time after the sinking of the Lusitania in the spring of 1915. The local kids are playing a game called war, courtesy of the WWI’s influence. They teamed up, dressed up, and made hideouts.

One of the girls, Susan, wanted to play with them. The only problem is that she's a girl, and women weren’t allowed to fight in the army back then, so none of the boys wanted her to play. Almost none. Her friend, John, decided to team up with her without any of the other boys knowing. He let her borrow his clothes. They took a bunch of pillow cases from their houses and filled them with dirt to make their base. They also made smoke bombs; that's what those little brown balls are. Yes, it's possible that all the ingredients you need to make smoke bombs are in your house. (They're harmless, but I still wouldn't recommend it). To top it all off, they're using pots and pans for helmets. Right now Lester and Henry are approaching their base, and Susan is ready to throw a smoke bomb at them.
