Although Akagi(s) are really talented, they can't compare their luck with Washizu
He's too lucky!

Actually, "dai san gan" (Jap) or "dai san yuan" (Ch) (Translated to "3 Great Scholars", also known as "3 Big Dragons") is a hand consisting of Pongs/Kongs of all three Dragons (the red, green, and white card). Having one Pongs/Kongs of it isn't.

Washizu's hand is called the "koku-shi-mu-sou" (Jap), "shi san yao" (Ch) (Translated to "13 Orphans", also known as "13 Wonders" or "13 Treasures"). This hand is to get the 1's and 9's of each suit, the 4 Winds, the 3 Dragons, and any 1 pair of these 13 cards.

"Tsumo" (Jap), "zi mo" (Ch) is translated to "self-drawn”. If game/win with all cards fully concealed (All tiles are drawn from the Wall, Chow/Pong/Kongs are concealed. Note: depending of the game style, there are rules that you cannot have concealed Kongs or only allow certain Kongs.), it is considered as "men-zen"(Jap) or "men qian qing" (Ch) (Translated to "Gate of Heavenly Purity").

I...I know...the joke is that they are all aiming for a hand that would be impossible to finish since they're sitting on one dragon each! I'm not sure how I drew Washizu's hand wrong though, I copied it off a online example...

Oh, Wazhizu hand is right. I didn't said it was wrong. lol. Nothing is wrong, in fact! I was just sharing info ^^

Wazhizu tsumo his koku shi mu sou, which is very scary, since self drawing a 13 wonders is super-duper-hard to get. Plus, it's a tsumo, meaning *everyone* have to pay him full amount. If I hear shi san yao zi mo any of my game, I probably have a heart attack, unless it's mine, then I would be so happy that I'll -still- get a heart attack.

The joke IS pretty good! Since all three of them is holding a set of dragon, which means that they can never get dai san gan! Plus the in-your-face-I-win adds real good twist!

What's that, all four winds and three dragons? I see other patterns but Mahjong scoring mystifies me. It's hard for me to even play Blackjack I'm so bad with numbers, lol.

fossilang3l In reply to Crush-Zombie [2008-08-29 15:29:23 +0000 UTC]

Oh, calculating the scoring is depending on the table rules. There's a min "tai" (points) that you must make to game which range from 0 point to 5 points. Then there is a cap/limit which can range from 13 to unlimited. Depending on the complexity of the hand that gamed, it get a certain amount of "tai". You would also get "bonus" points for pong the dragons, your wind, the table's wind, getting your flowers or getting animals.

From the points, there will be a pricing. For example, 1 point = $0.50, or 1 point = $xxx. How much it is set is really depending on the table rules.

I'm not sure about the Japanese way of playing, or able the pros table rule. This is what I learn from playing with friends ^^

Haha, Washizu's hand is a Limit Hand so it doesn't go after the general system! You should def read up on the rules! Mahjong is super fun to play online [link] You can start at "III Creating hands" since the computer handles "setting up" and the like.
