'Ominous'

Although this isn't my first upload of the year, it is the fist painting I completed this year. I was (unsurprisingly) getting bored of the 'face-on' perspective I've used for almost every painting in this colourful portrait series and it was beginning to stunt my imagination. So while I normally actively avoid putting too much time into my sketches (to save time), the angle of the reference picture I chose demanded closer attention and study before getting the paint on. I think studying the lighting and shadows properly beforehand made a big difference with this piece - the proportions are that much more realistic and the shadows have given it a depth the rest of my work lacks. Clearly I would benefit from taking more time with my sketches and doing some proper photo studies.

I'm not a fan of new year resolutions but I do promise more art, hard work and improvement for 2019~
