AUGH.

Comic Sans, Jokerman, Papyrus. (I secretly love Papyrus, actually, but... COMIC SANS....)

I'm not a big fan of serif fonts because they look plain to me. I prefer most sans serif fonts (like Crimson or Times New Roman.)

Comic sans looks professional on a published comic book, but it doesn't look professional on a manuscript for a novel.

Well, so give me 5 examples of typography where Comic Sans actually does look professional, I dare you.

There is no reason why those can't look professional ^^'
I'm not intending to sound offensive, but there's no real use for Comic Sans this days and everyone above 9 should acknowledge that. It's just a fact.

Comic sans looks professional in a comic book. It complements the pictures. Times New Roman would make the words seem as though they don't belong in the comic.

However, comic sans doesn't look professional on a novel manuscript.

If Comic Sans looked professional in comic books, professionally published comics would use it. Amazingly, they don't, because there are plenty actually well designed fonts in similar aesthetic out there.

Comic Sans, while inspired by comics, was not designed for comics, but for a word bubble of a Microsoft mascot character. It was a typeface hastily put together for one purpose that ended up as a standard Windows font basically accidentally, because it was already at Microsoft's disposal. There are better looking alternatives to Comic Sans, including at least one "fixed" version with better spacing and such.

Literally no-one says "use Times New Roman in comic books", so throw that strawman argument away, sit down and learn about lettering instead of leaving ignorant comments.

I always thought comic sans was the font used in comic books because the fonts in manga look like it.

I know no one says to use T.N.R. in comics (that's why I said it would look unprofessional in a comic book.) It was more of an example on how a sans serif font can look professional or unprofessional in certain situations... and that was before I learned even comic publishers don't like comic sans.

It was more of an example on how a sans serif font can look professional or unprofessional in certain situations...What does being a sans serif font has to do with anything? Serif and sans serif fonts have different applications. Both kinds can look unprofessional when used inappropriately... of when they're just badly designed, like Comic Sans is.

*hides behind a chair*

I am very guilty of using and liking Comic Sans. But...only in comics. I'm mean it does have the feel of a person's actual hand writing which is, well... something I like seeing in comics (both american and transalated manga). It just doesn't feel right without it being used there.

*gets shot in the head for using a lame excuse*

But anywhere else, though? Damn. Yeah, it is annoying.

Emotikonz In reply to jacobsmacob [2011-02-17 23:24:13 +0000 UTC]

Try "Papa Moe" for the comic book look, then, or "i hate comic sans" for the scrawl. Comic Sans might have been comicy once but it certainly isn't now. *tsk tsk*

Just browse around Dafont - lots of free fonts there and I garuntee you'll find one you love.

I -used to- like Papyrus.. I love concept, but it is RIDICULOUSLY overused.
If someone were to make a font basically identical, however with different details, I'm sure I'd like it. xD

Emotikonz In reply to clotus [2011-02-15 10:56:31 +0000 UTC]

Monotype Corsiva doesn't seem too bad. Though it seems a little... tacky, somehow, at least it isn't splattered over every 'out of order' sign or on a pirate map prop.... I'd never even heard of the font's name until you mentioned it, though I do recognise the style of face.

clotus In reply to Emotikonz [2011-02-15 11:59:45 +0000 UTC]

It seems to be more popular in my country.. it's not very bad, but it's too overused and misused.

Amusing and so true!

Although interestingly enough I haven't seen much Jokerman around. Comic Sans is everywhere! @_@ It's trying to take over the world.... <_< I love Papyrus as well!

Emotikonz In reply to LLAMAS-EAT-PIE [2011-02-15 10:57:49 +0000 UTC]

There's even a FONT called "i hate comic sans" (no caps). It's actually one of my favourites, as well. But Papyrus... something about Papyrus really appeals to me. Overused or not, there aren't really any fonts like it. Whereas I usually have trouble telling the difference between no-nonsense sharp-edges sans serif fonts. (Also I don't like serif fonts, I think the serifs look like ugly tumours. AUGH.)
