Description Here's my first colored pencil tutorial.
Because a lot of people are asking me to do a tutorial of this media.

Here's some of my tips for colored pencil.
1. Always keep your pencil sharp.
2. Find some paper to place your hand on when coloring, This can prevent your hand from smudging colors on your artwork.

Link to the original work.

*****
Here's something I forgot to include in my tutorial. : x

1. I used Faber Castel. Colleen. Staedtler student colored pencil.

2. I used Light Brown [wax based] for drawing original lineart.

3 Copy paper and Printer paper are the same.

4. If you don't have white gel pen, You can use white postercolor or gouache instead.

I was wondering, you wouldn't happen to have a lineart of this picture to perhaps practice what you mentioned in the tutorial. Just a thought if not its alright. Its still a great tutorial!

It was being drawn directly on paper so I don't have the clean outline version ;;

Hey there --

I'm really intrigued by the technique of using print paper on top of a textured sketchbook cover!!! I understand this tutorial was made years ago so I was hoping maybe do you still remember what sketch book you used?Β

It is a square sketchbook with small grain textured black cover
and I think it is exclusively available in my country only.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emperpep In reply to inazumagalaxy [2015-12-29 08:08:53 +0000 UTC]

I placed thin printer paper on textured surface [I used synthetic leather texture of sketchbook cover] and then started coloring, small toothy textured surface will make coloring looks smoother and easier to lay down color.

I used scanner to scan my traditional work, if they were done on sketchbook I will take a photo with camera.

cheaper grade of colored pencil
There are cheap student grade colored pencils and expensive artist grade colored pencils [such as Faber Castel PolyChromos and Caran D'ache Supracolor]

It is possible to get smoother texture with only student grade color pencil, without any additional tool or special technique (e.g. dussel, etc)?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emperpep In reply to Silvextris [2015-06-07 13:54:06 +0000 UTC]

I think keeping your pencils sharp will make it easier to to achieve smooth coloring result, compared to blunt pencil.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Silvextris In reply to emperpep [2015-06-09 04:24:36 +0000 UTC]

I already try that method by keep pencil sharp, it help a lot
but still not enough for me..
How about you, are you satisfied with your color pencil texture on Catgirl with a Goldfish?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emperpep In reply to Silvextris [2015-06-09 06:31:41 +0000 UTC]

Might I see your result?

If you want smoother result with colored pencil, maybe try using icarus board, it will slightly melt down your pencil pigment and make everything looks smooth [it is up to your choice tho, I have no personal recommendation about it]
xn--nhppro-c3a1761d0fa.vn/imag…
esterroi.com/images/made/uploa…

It also depends on your paper too , if you use textured paper, your drawing will looks toothy as your paper, but I found having texture in my work make it looks more complete as texture in one important art element.Β

and I'm satisfied with texture on the goldfish artwork, I placed printer paper on textured sketchbook cover and it made very nice texture for me.

I did this one on smooth printer paper, which looks smoother than the upper one [I should make more colored pencil artworks, everything here are so old ; ;]

Silvextris In reply to emperpep [2015-06-10 03:33:58 +0000 UTC]

As always your drawing is very great

Did you use that board when coloring with pencil?

I use print paper 100 gsm,Faber Castell classic, and Lyra groove color pencil for additional color. But mainly I use Faber Castell

here are my drawings with pencils:
fav.me/d8l4o96 ---> scanned, this is older one
fav.me/d8vaxkk ---> photo, this is newer one

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emperpep In reply to Silvextris [2015-06-10 04:23:12 +0000 UTC]

no, I didnt use it, as I prefer dry toothy texture more than juicy oil-like pictures using the icarus board

from looking at your drawings, you seem to press your pencils very hard to cover white paper space [look at that teddy ]

if you use student grade pencil, it might be pretty difficult to make thick coloring like that, have you ever tried Fabercastell PolyChromos? or Derwent colorsoft? [but I recommend polychromos because of less waxbloom]

If you take a look at my 2 drawings , you may noticed that I didnt put too much pressure on my drawings , and small white paper texture can be seen allover the pictures, with this coloring technique it seems easier for me to control colored pencil, more than making it really thick. [If I want to cover all paper space with color, I will use watercolor, copic or acrylic colors instead, but these medias are a bit more difficult to master than colored pencil.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Silvextris In reply to emperpep [2015-06-10 05:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Yup that is my problem, dark colors. I can control the light one, because the light colors is not too contrast with paper texture.
Different with dark colors, e.g: Β If I didn't press that pencil hardly, I didn't get that brown color and all the Β paper texture would not get covered. But if I press it hardly I got the good brown color for my Teddy and most of the paper textre are covered, but the texture will be ...ta-da... road asphalt... bit frustrated.

I think Polychromos and some Copic Markers will improve my drawing, but is a bit expensive than student grade tools. I have to think twice if I want to buy them That is the reason I ask you this question at first: "It is possible to get smoother texture with ONLY student grade color pencil, WITHOUT any additional tool or special technique (e.g. dussel, etc)?".
I just want to know your opinion about this, because you are more experienced than me. Cause I am only a student - not art student and not taking a special course about drawing - I'm an IT student, my mind is 'blank' about drawing, art, tool, technique, etc but I like to draw, and want to make a good drawing

It will be pretty hard to get the a 'vision' when I learn all about drawing with just by myself - I need advice-
At the end I got a conclusion that using only student grade color pencil would not get smoother texture when coloring and I need those more expensive tools for better drawing Β

Yup, thank you for sharing the opinions with me and give me those advice
It is a very precious to have chat with you

i have a question. 2 actually:

1)when you color white clothing what method do you use? also with white hair?
2) when you start to color do you use the light color first and then use the dark color for shading?

i'm terrible with shading. i haven't mastered color pencil yet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

emperpep In reply to Innocent-Beauty [2015-02-27 18:25:52 +0000 UTC]

when I shade on white object, it depends on picture temperature and object around it, I used pale lavender/light blue to shade white anime cloth quite often, but it really depends on background around the character, these 2 pictures for example, have light blue atmosphere, so their cloth shadow are blue [with a little mix of violet]Β

========================

sometimes I used warmer colors if it is needed, background colors on these 2 pictures are warmer than those 2 above, so shadow on white object will be warmer as well.
Β

==================

if the background looks grayish, white cloth can be colored with grayish color like this [I added some pink inside it as well because there are pink color around and it will affect shadow of white object as well ]

Β
==============================

and for watercolor or colored pencil I mostly started with lighter colors, but if I use acrylic or other opaque paints such as oil, I often started with darker colors such as burnt sienna [depends on picture temperature], and built up more lighter color layers with glazing technique overtime.
