Oh, I was talking to a freind who makes cakes (oh how related O.o)... she photographs them all. She found that with wedding cakes (ie, white) it works best if you put a black stocking over the camera lens, 'cause it cuts out the glare. I'm not sure if it would work for you with your silvers, but it's probably worth a try, since that glare is painful XD. Though I'd share.
