Description Another Wheel of Time Fan Art and also my last painting for the year! 100% imagination for everything...no references were used. I will probably go back to a couple of my old paintings for touch ups/ rework for a while. This painting was requested by

Request:

I'd love to see your take on Nynaeve! Wouldn't mind seeing a good one of her in the Two Rivers - I've seen loads of other works of her dressed in silks and wearing the ki'sain.  Would be nice to have a nice image of the good ol' Wisdom.

Hope you guys like!

faving this even though I hate this character so very much.  You actually make her look pleasant here.  Actually, it's really sad, but I hate every single female character in this book series more than I can actually say.

I think she had lighter hair, especially based on the back of the Memory of Light dust jacket.

Thank you very much! Tough working from imagination for this one, but I think it turned out alright in the end

Yea...MLP is pretty surprisingly famous on the web. Not sure why....then again I have never watched it or had any interest.

Whoa! This painting is sooo amazing! It really paids off when you put your whole imagination at work! Every detail is so finely made and the  colours are very well chosen. And I love Nynaeve!

Thank you very much! This was a major test of imagination for me! I really wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but in the end I am pretty proud of the end result

I think she is absolutely lovely.  Another thing most people forget about Nynaeve is that she's an orphan, which gives her a lot of reason to be so ultra-protective of the boys and Egwene...

Thank you very much for the compliment! You know I completely forgot she was an orphan. I don't even remember reading about it Just like Elbow3 said, I don't remember a lot of time being spent on her past, description etc. Probably why I glossed over it.

Ok, this is my favourite so far!

I've always wanted to see a good Nynaeve from when it all started.  RJ is a brilliant writer but I've always wanted more description about how the characters looked.  All I can remember is the braid, the dark eyes and a few people saying she's pretty.  I remember other characters being described down to their face shape and skin tone, so I'm not sure why such a major character was left with a vague description.

It might please you to know that I held the computer up to my face when looking at this! I had to check out that braid, it's lovely! Then I spotted the other aspects of the picture, like the fire inside the cottage, and the detail in the basket of wildflowers/herbs, and the pestle & mortar (I'm not sure what it's actual name is).  All lovely.

Of course, it wouldn't be right for me not to offer some constructive criticism.  I love this picture, so again, don't worry about it.

First, her face - lovely as it is - being surrounded with that much hair, facing away from the light, would be very dark indeed.  It's not too bad though.

She has 3 fingers on the left.  Yeah, I'm looking that closely!  Definitely only 3.  The right hand, despite having all fingers present, is the wrong shape.  Like I mentioned in your other picture, take a look at your own hands when you grasp something - they almost never form a complete square block, unless holding something strangely shaped.  Usually, the middle and index fingers/knuckles jutt out a little, as they're longer and the thumb gets in the way.  This is just me being picky - hands are hard.  Very hard.

I've been staring at it for about half an hour now & I've just noticed her foot - nice.  Also just noticed the cauldron/pot above the fire - I thought it was just a light spot earlier, so that's pleased me.

Finally, since there's a fire in the cottage, it won't be so dark in there.  If it was really light in there though, it would detract the eye from Nynaeve, so it's not really a bad thing.

That's all I have to say about this, it's lovely.

Yay! I am glad you liked the outcome!  I am generally pleased with the results because I sketched and painted it all from imagination. I hate hands and feet...even when I am staring at a very good reference They are so much more dynamic that most other parts of the human anatomy (which I just have barely above amateur understanding of). Two of my major goals for 2014 is lots of anatomy studies as well as working with more colors and refining my palettes to a more evolved/mature one. I tend to stick with reddish hues and generally monochromatic style paintings.

Backgrounds have always been a challenge to me because I tend to focus on one part of a subject matter and then skim over other parts. Even though this isn't detailed, I am  really happy you appreciate the little things I tossed into the picture to make it more wholesome

Thank you very much always giving me great advice!

Thank you very much! I am glad you think she looks good. Painting without references is really not working out great for me so far. I tend to miss a lot of details and default to a very cartoonish look and palette which I really don't like as much

*o* This got to be my all-time favourite Nynaeve. Perfect hair, perfect face, perfect pose, perfect hair, perfect silhouette, did I mention perfect hair?, and all that things around her! The only problem is her too gentle expression while gripping braid xD

endave In reply to mroczna888 [2013-12-30 12:20:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!! woohoo!! I intentionally didn't want her to be angry since she is all alone doing what she enjoys (herbs and remedies). She wasn't tugging her braid, just thin k of it as her moving it out of the way so she can continue working I Had to have her trademark move in the painting or it wouldn't really be Nynaeve

Thank you very much! Heh...yea, paintings never look good starting out. It can be pretty daunting...used to make me upset when I first started painting. Now I know it is part of the process all artists must go through
