From working in fast food myself I can say this misunderstanding is pretty spot on. especially in the mornings, every one seems irritable and rude in the mornings. I honestly think this has more to do with how the clerk in this example is feeling as they will project that onto others. Hence why I would try to be as ridiculously mirthful as possible during the morning hours when I had to work that shift.
