Description
This month the wallpaper was inspired by the Perseid Meteor Shower (which should peak in activity around August 12), and the birthstones Onyx and Peridot .

This time around, the actual meaning behind the elements of the wallpaper were simple. I wanted to use colors from the birthstones in an astrologically based image centering around the idea of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

To me, the more interesting part here is actually the process that created this wallpaper — I set out to do this in as analog a way as reasonably possible. All of the photos that compose this wallpaper were taken with my iPhone (4S, if you're wondering) and a set of lenses that attached to the phone (Thanks Mom!). I would have used film, but going digital for the photography afforded me the ability to shoot quick and get what I needed way quicker than film.

The shoot took place over two days in my apartment (a weekend). Here's a photo of the set-up .
As you can see, I had some black poster board to act as a matte background and I used not the large light you see in the photo, but a smaller spotlight to selectively light parts of that glass container.

Speaking of the container, what's in it? Well...

• Vegetable Oil
• Water
• Turpentine
• Gold Iridescent Powder Pigment
• White / Silver Iridescent Powder Pigment
• Green Cloth Dye
• Yellow Cloth Dye

The oil, turpentine, and gold powder pigment settled into a layer on the top while the rest of the ingredients settled into the watery area below that. Once I had everything in the container, I started photographing and filming the natural movement of the materials to see what results I could get. Most of what I photographed / filmed didn't work at all for this wallpaper, but they did look really neat!
