This month's wallpaper has a litany of inspirations — Vorticism , Dazzle Camouflage , Computer Vision and the Viola / Jones Object Detection Framework , Camouflage against the face detecting algorithms , TV static , and of course, aquamarine and bloodstone , which are the birthstones for March.

My initial idea was to build an image that referenced "CV Dazzle ", which is a highly stylized camouflage "language" designed to protect one's identity against computer vision systems. It was inspired by a now defunct method of naval camouflage called "Dazzle". The main idea behind Dazzle and by extension, CV Dazzle, is their focus on breaking up the shape of what's being hidden. They, through direct obfuscation, or by surface coloration, distort the object to the point where its speed, heading, or identity can no longer be faithfully rationalized by an observer, be they digital or mammalian.

Vorticism comes in after the wildly painted naval ships started to get some publicity. The cubists (particularly, Picasso) quickly took credit as the group who inspired the dazzle method of camouflage, with Norman Wilkinson credited as the person who actually invented the style. However, Vorticist Edward Wadsworth supervised the camouflaging of over 2,000 ships during WWI.

When we continue down the path of inspiration, we come across the Viola / Jones Object Detection Framework . This holds particular importance because this is where the Vorticism, Dazzle, and the yet to be explained TV static and forest all start to come together...

The TV static falls in-theme with both computer vision and Dazzle — its static undulations mimic the Dazzle style while emitting the visual hum of technology and omnipresent observation.

To me, there is a ton of visual coherence between all of these different things:

• Vorticism

• Dazzle

• Viola / Jones Object Detection Features: Image of features , Video of feature usage

• CV Dazzle

• TV Static (this track was composed in Figure specifically for its static signature — left audio is running into the video port, right audio is in the right audio port)

• Forest (used as a symbol of rejection of the digital in line with the inherent "rejection" to digital identification conveyed by CV Dazzle)

... all of these things look wildly similar to me, and I just couldn't get the idea out of my head...

Oh, and the coloring, while mainly from the images of TV static, is representative of March's birthstones, Aquamarine and Bloodstone.
