Description Song of 611

I sing a song of gladness for 611,
she glides with swan like splendor on the rails.
With sun-bright headlight and towering drivers propelling her,
she steams as gentle summer breezes play.

And when she comes to rest in a busy rail yard,
her grace and beauty noble in repose!
I whisper that my heart is always with her,
no matter on what foreign rails, she goes.

Mountain grades bring steep steep rails,
Chugging engine, sand applied!
Creaking rail-ties, cold gray steel,
slippery rails that seek their prize!

Still, 611 labors on! Through the southern countryside!
Till with courage she reaches the destination!
Safely...Safely to the station....at last.

I sing a song of gladness for 611,
no matter where I am I'll always see;
A vision of the steam unfurled above her,
as she moves on in stately majesty.

With sleek streamline to pierce the evening air,
she steams away and follows her own rails.
But though a world of railroads come between us,
she'll always find a roundhouse in my heart.

She'll always find a roundhouse in my heart.
In my heart!

As my railfan day came to a close, I got one last picture of 611, whilst it was returning to Manassas, Va. I'll give the person who can get the name of the song I used as a base a present.

I wish I had the opportunity to see her. Sadly her excursions are limited this year. Her last scheduled run (according to the steam excursion schedule on the NS website) is the weekend of July 4th.

You got that right. If she doesn't come to Cincy soon, there will be some angry railfans; the N&W Powhatan Arrow used to come through Cincinnati and was pulled by Class J locomotives like 611.

Indeed, soon, perhaps, the Powhatan arrow will be revived in the form ofย  an excursion.

Maybe... It would be hard to make a Powhatan Arrow excursion; the original N&W Cincinnati-Portsmouth "Peavine" that the Powhatan Arrow ran on was abandoned by NS a few years ago. Cincinnati East Terminal now operates part of the Peavine near Cincinnati.

I at least hope it goes to Bristol, VA. I love that area because SOU #630 operated in the area on the ET&WNC, and the N&W Abingdon Branch is close by too. The Abingdon Branch got fame for it's "Virginia Creeper" local, and was well-photographed by O. Winston Link.

I love the Abington branch! Such an adorable line with small towns, breathtaking scenery, little freight/passenger mixed trains, and the famous NW 4-8-0s. Too bad its gone. O Winston Link did such a good job capturing that line, and others on the NW.

There is now a trail along the line, andmany rrestored structures still stand. At the beginning of the trail in Abingdon, there is a 4-8-0. It is what I use for my icon on DA.

Ah, I see. I always liked the N&W 4-8-0s.

They are some nice engines, and the queen of them is 475 in Strasburg.
