Description PENCILS by COLORS by

This piece is a collab effort. It features the one and only Jeff ‘CHAMBA’ Cruz on pencils and myself on colors. If you like this version, go check his original drawing at the link below.

Here is a breakdown of my coloring process:
The background is a watercolor I did by dabbing the paint on Bristol board with paper towels to get a blotchy effect. The stars were created by dipping a toothbrush into white paint and flicking the paint off the bristles. The image was scanned and the haloes and color touch ups were done on Photoshop CS.

The coloring on Surfer was done on CS as well. The biggest thing about rendering chrome is to treat each muscle individually. Of course, knowledge of correct anatomy is an issue as well, so brush up on it- that helps.

All in all, this was a fun project to touch up on my coloring skills. I don’t want to be a victim of my own style and coloring different people’s work helps that. Chamba’s strongest technical ability (IMHO) is his forced perspective, which allows him to draw at angles that keep his work dynamic and full of movement. It was refreshing to work with that!

Excellent use of mixed mediums! Very good job chroming the musclature!
It's especially cool that you've explained the process too, I wish more people did that.

i'm glad you appreciate the explanation. I try to teach people that complex things are often easy to do. I find that it inspires people when i demystify the process.

Sometimes the easiest solutions are the hardest to come up with. Wish more people put some kind of comments on their work.

Love your use of gradients, and the background rocks! The linework actually looks a bit too sharp, though... A careful touch with the smudge and blur tools might help it.

Thanx for the comps! This was the first time i worked with someone else's pencils, so it was a bit tricky for me. Chamba's pencils weren't inked in this case, so it created a rougher look than I'm used to. I'm still kinda figuring out how to make the line work pop while looking smooth. Your tips will definitely be implemented in the future.

Aw thanx Val I appreciate it! Yeah, chrome is something I really enjoy. I learned to do it pretty well as a t-shirt airbrush artist and it's something every artist should have fun with.

Your welcome! I think I might try it out. Do you have any technique ideas? Or possibly do you know a good tutorial?
