Description Some of you may remember that concept of the TOS Enterprise with the 'battleship style' turrets. I think it was last year's April's fool somewhere. Well, seeing as i hate the JJ'rise design, and quite liked that one, i thought i'd take the idea even further. My biggest problem with that one was, that it was the TOS Enterprise, while my big favourite is of course the TMP one. So here it is, a battleship-ized TMP Enterprise, taken to the extremes. If some of the hardcore Trek fans loathe this, no offence will be taken, i know it is very unconventional. But as a huge Star Wars fanatic, i'd so like to see Trek go in a direction like this...

Before the reveal, there was a fake image of the Enterprise that was going to be used for JJ's movie with battleship guns.

Interesting idea. Another one I've seen experimented with is replacing the axial torpedo tubes with conformal multi-cell missile launchers such as those used on contemporary US Navy vessels.

I'm superficially reminded of Pierre Drolet's USS Jefferies design, which I supposed makes sense seeing as both it and this were both designed around the same general idea of building a star trek ship with aesthetics inspired by modern battleships.

This is what the NX-01 Enterprise should have been.

A ship still armed with conventional weapon turrets and spinning radar/lidar sensors. An experimental prototype phaser cannon that blows out half the ships fuses every time it gets fired. Missiles The crew are initially armed with firearms and tasers. The ship is supplied by asteroid mining drones and a built in refinery for processing new dilithium while on deep exploration because they burn it up constantly. No shields and transporters which can't be used on organic matter.

Then the caste of the show just slowly upgrades their ship and equipment over the next few seasons as they learn more/refine what they know and stumble on/purchase new technologies recognizable to anyone familiar from TOS.

Hello:
Considering all Enterprise iterations we know (Original, JJ-verse, Koerner,...) this surely is the most original of them all. Quite the concept, I do like it a lot and it is an invitation for the imagination.

Your concept is very unique .

All those sticky up pointy bits you love so much would play merry hell with the shield systems...

(PS - Photon torpedoes are designed to attack warp speed targets... how the hell do you expect a photon torpedo powered by a rocket to hit something at that speed?)

Other than that, looks fine.

better than JJ abrahams - "lets put Humvee spinner alloys on the enterprise and cover her with so many hatches the hull integrity would be a nightmare".

Enterprise-E In reply to hobnobrev [2016-05-05 09:24:58 +0000 UTC]

There is absolutely no canon info about what hull shape requirements there are for shield systems to function.. though from the visuals we know that all layers of Star Trek shielding extend outward from the hull to some extent... At worst, the pointy bits would not be covered by the innermost layers of the shield, but maybe they are designed to be like that, to provide sensor information?

Also, the fact that the photons on this concept are intended to look more like missiles visually does not mean that they use XX century chemical propellants.

Lastly, this concept was never intended as a super serious hardcore thing, but rather as a fun and badass reimagination, that even to it's extremism is still better than the JJ'verse stuff.

I can see the appeal of arrays and banks and all that...
My biggest problem with most trek ships is that they don't do anything.
say what you want about JJ Enterprise, at least it had moving parts.
That said... I love this design.  Turrets are where its at man.

Gooooooootta say ... I'm loving this 1000000000000x more than Abrams' USS Failprise. Goddamn thing looks like a goddamn dinner plate atop a half-squeezed tube of toothpaste with obese fucking nacelles.

I heard somewhere that an initial redesign concept was submitted by Gabriel Köerner when word of the new Trek movies got out. From what I've seen, the designs remained true to the original design of the USS Enterprise, while giving it a more realistically futuristic look. APPARENTLY, the designs were rejected, however, due to Köerner's involvement with the Battlestar Galactica reboot. If that's the case, Abrams needs to eat a bullet.

But back to your Enterprise, I love it. I likely wouldn't want to see it in the franchise, BUT I think that it would be a realistic approach to how we in the real world would build our first space battleships. Possibly. You should copyright it just in case so they have to pay you (or your descendants) for the privilege

Hello, I am a modeler and kitbasher and would like to make a study-model {1:1000 scale for now} of your design or some variant of that design.

Heh, I even came up with a quickie Primary-Trek universe reason for this vessel of yours.

Here it is:"Pulled out of Fleet BoneYards from across the Alpha Quadrant, all of the Enterprise Class vessels {or Constitution Refit class, if you prefer} were modified and pressed into service after the Borg incident at Wolf-359.

In the Dominion War they proved invaluable in several combat and other, special operations."

Your thoughts?

I like the much stubbier nacelle stalks.
It's always screamed at me that the skinny stalk connecting different vital sections of the ship are a massive structural vulnerability.
One well placed shot onto the piece between the saucer and the hanger could half the ship.

[link] Great minds think alike, eh?

She's a beautiful ship, but one the TMP-era Gene Roddenberry would never approve of. (That's not to say he wouldn't steal certain design elements, if they proved popular- Roddenberry was that kind of an a**hole.)

Oh, does she have a forward shuttlebay door, and an angled flight deck, so she can simultaneously launch and retrieve shuttles?

I quite like this. Not too keen on the weird "trenches" on the top side of the saucer but the rest of it is neat. I particularly like the phaser turrets and real-world style bridge. It's an interesting reinterpretation, I'd like to see full elevations and possibly a 3D model.
