You can try to look at different ref photos and find out the anatomy  
it was helpful to me a great book (I think the most famous one) about human and mammals anatomy.. it has good examples and super drawings ^^

Your probably totally right - last week I managed to find fabulous anatomy reference book for just 4$ though it mostly covers horses and other domesticated animals. I kind of struggle to find really in depth anatomical references for wild animals ( probably should start to look more into books for vets lol  )

I think you can find something useful on the net too ^_^ 
well, I know that nothing compares to a book but unfortunately books are not cheap T.T that's why internet could be a good resource ^^
