I used a layer mask. If you already know about masks, you can skip the next two paragraphs.

On mine (Photoshop CS3 Extended) you apply a layer mask by clicking an icon that looks like a white circle inside a gray rectangle. It's found in the layers window next to new layer, trash, etc.

A mask is used to hide part of a layer. When first applied a mask is white (ie it doesn't hide anything), but by painting it black you completely hide a layer (like erasing would) or by adding shades of gray you can make it transparent (the darker, the more hidden).

*Now to your specific question. While working in the mask, I applied a thck black outline to the dress. Then painted on a dark gray and a light gray over the dress, so it would fade slightly. I blurred and smudged till I got the look I was going for.

**Side Note: NEVER erase part of a layer. ALWAYS mask the part that you don't want. Erasing is permanent, and dangerous if you mess up and erase too much. The mask, on the other hand, can be painted exactly how you want it, going back over it in white if you hide too much.

Sorry for the length. I'm a Photoshop nerd :3

Not too long. Getting the dress to fadeout and trying to make the roses stand out took some work though. Thanks for the fave ^_^
